Anchorage Campus - Security and Fire Safety Report
Providing a safe instructional, living, and working environment is an important goal at UAA. UAA is required by federal law to report crimes that occur on campus and at off-campus locations where University classes and other sponsored activities occur. Those statistics are available by clicking on the links below.

Additional information can also be accessed by using the links on the right hand side of this page.
REPORTING A CRIMEStudents and employees are strongly encouraged to report all campus crime to the University Police Department. UAA employees may report crimes to supervisors. Supervisors are responsible to report the incident to University Police. Supervisors are encouraged to seek permission from the victim to share his or her information, but may withhold the victim's name upon his or her request.

TIMELY WARNINGS
Timely warnings are issued to the Anchorage campus when: 1) a serious crime is reported to a campus security authority or the University Police Department and 2) it is considered to represent a serious or continuing threat to students and employees. The Campus Response Team consists of members from Student Affairs, University Police, Facilities and Campus Services, and University Advancement. Timely warnings may be communicated via email, broadcasts over classroom phones, the phone system in the residential community, posted signs, and the UAA website, social media websites, the Green & Gold Daily, the campus information phone line, and/or notifications to local radio and television stations. Anyone with information warranting a timely warning should report the circumstances to the University Police Department by phoning 786-1120 or going in person to the University Police Department dispatch center in Eugene Short Hall, Room 114.
EMERGENCY/CRISIS NOTIFICATION
The Campus Response Team (CRT), consisting of members from Student Affairs, University Police, Facilities and Campus Services, and University Advancement meets regularly during the academic year to discuss, plan, and address either current or potential incidents which may affect the campus. The CRT regularly sends email messages to staff and students to educate the campus community about seasonal safety issues and what to do in the event of specific emergencies.
If requesting a response to a fire or medical emergency, dial 911. Reports about all other campus emergencies should all be directed to University Police by phoning 786-1120, using an emergency phone in an elevator, or using a blue-lighted emergency phone on campus. In the event of hazardous materials, the Anchorage Fire Department will notify University Police that they are responding to an incident on the Anchorage campus. Conversely, in the event of fire, University Police will contact AFD to verify they are enroute. In the event of a public health emergency, University Police will coordinate with the Student Health & Counseling Center and Alaska Department of Health & Social Services. In the event of a natural gas leak, University Police will consult with utility responders to determine the size of the evacuation area. In the event that Anchorage Police pursue a criminal onto the Anchorage campus, Anchorage Police usually notify University Police.
University Police will notify the campus community or the appropriate segment of the community, upon verification of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of some or all students or employees occurring on campus. The University Police will take into account the safety of the community, determine the content of the notification and initiate the notification system, unless notification will, in the professional judgment of responsible authorities, compromise efforts to assist victims or to contain, respond to, or otherwise mitigate the emergency.
Due to the immediacy and nature of the incident, University Police may initiate the notification system and send immediate notifications to the campus community or the appropriate segment of the community. The initial notification may occur via UAA email, broadcasts over campus telephones and/or calls to each student's residence hall room. In addition, Anchorage campus staff members may be contacted via a special alert system that attempts to contact employees by telephone, email, and/or text message. Anchorage campus employees who would like to receive these special notifications should contact Emergency Manager Ron Swartz at 786-1149 and request to be added to this system.
As soon as is practical, University Police contacts members of the Campus Response Team. If University Police have not already made an emergency notification, the CRT will determine who should be notified and the content of the notification. The CRT is charged with managing the emergency from onset to recovery. The CRT has both the decision-making and financial authority to address emergencies on campus. Both University Police and the Campus Response Team have received Incident Command System (ICS) training. ICS training is also provided to other selected University employees who CRT may call upon to help them manage an emergency.
After the initial notification, the CRT may issue subsequent notifications using the previously identified communication methods. The CRT will determine the content of subsequent notifications. University Advancement may also post subsequent notifications on the Anchorage campus Twitter webpage at http://twitter.com/#!/uaanchorage, the Anchorage campus webpage at www.uaa.alaska.edu, and/or the Anchorage campus information line at 786-1800.
The Campus Response Team may issue subsequent notifications to specific areas on campus or the entire campus. University Police or their agents may post flyers at each entrance to residence halls, the front door of each Templewood apartment, and/or the entrance to each Main Apartment Complex stairwell that is affected by the emergency. University Police may use public address systems in Rasmuson Hall, the Library, and Student Union. University Police may make announcements using speakers on patrol cars or by walking around campus and using megaphones.
University Advancement is responsible for issuing subsequent notifications and disseminating emergency information to the larger Anchorage community by contacting local media including television and radio stations and appropriate agencies.
In the event that a building needs to be evacuated, the occupants will be directed to the emergency assembly area. CRT may provide information regarding where events scheduled for that building have been relocated. In the event that the entire Anchorage campus needs to be evacuated, the CRT may close campus. In the event of a campuswide evacuation, on campus residents would be asked to stay with relatives or friends in Anchorage. If on campus residents do not have local relatives or friends off campus, University Housing will coordinate alternate housing for on campus residents. In the event of an emergency, the CRT may ask everyone to shelter-in-place.
The Campus Response Team makes safety announcements and reminders to the University community throughout the year. When the Campus Response Team needs to inform the campus community about school closures due to snow or other safety issues, notifications will be made using the following forms of communication:
• UAA webpage
• Campus Switchboard at 786-1800 and Press 2
• UAA Advancement page on Facebook
• UAA Twitter alerts
• Local TV channels 2, 11, and 13
• Radio stations KSKA 91.1 and KRUA 88.1
• Clear Channel Communications
• Your UAA-assigned e-mail inbox
Both University employees and students are invited to participate in emergency preparedness training exercises once per semester. In the past, Anchorage campus has invited APD, AFD, local hospitals, Joint Base Elmendorf Fort Richardson (JBER) and Charter College to participate to test the coordination of multiple agencies to address an emergency. In the past few years, the Anchorage campus has conducted exercises on earthquakes, plane crashes, hazardous materials, and terrorism, as well as a tabletop exercise on an active shooter scenario. In every planned exercise, there is an after-action review that is written and distributed to the CRT and administration. The Office of the Emergency Manager keeps a description of the exercises including dates and times of the exercises and whether they were announced or unannounced.
Once a year, campus building evacuation drills occur across the entire campus. At these events, University Police hand out flyers explaining to students and employees what to do in the event of a building evacuation. The Emergency Manager keeps a description of each drill including the date and time and whether the drill was announced or unannounced. The Emergency Manager summarized the results of the evacuation drills for each building and forwards a report to each building manager. To see the evacuation results for a particular building on campus, see the building manager.
In coordination with campus building evacuation drills, the Anchorage campus will publish its emergency response and evacuation procedures by including a link to the Emergency Operations Plan in a Green & Gold Daily announcement. UAA's Emergency Operations Plan and family of documents includes single-page incident actions plans for specific topics, i.e., fire alarms, pandemic illnesses, and suspicious packages or substances. These action plans apply to all UAA campuses. For further information regarding UAA's emergency response preparedness, please visit www.uaa.alaska.edu/upd/ep.cfm.
