Institutional Biosafety Committee

Institutional Biosafety Committee

The Institutional Biosafety Committee is charged with reviewing all research involving recombinant DNA, genetic engineering and related studies, plus research on potentially infectious agents. It also assures that appropriate precautions are followed to protect the University and the community.

Institutional Biosafety Training

Online Biosafety training is provided through the CITI Program.

This new Biosafety course, developed for the CITI Program by Benjamin Fontes, MPH, CBSP at Yale University, will provide the learner with a solid foundation in the principles of the containment of biohazards.  The Biosafety Course is modular.  Go to the CITI Program link above to login for the biosafety training.

Biosafety Documents and Resources

Please refer to the updated UAA Research Lab Policies.

For your convenience, here is the link to Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 5th Edition from the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health.  FYI Section V Vertebrate Animal Biosafety Level Criteria for Vivarium Research Facilities covers recommendations and requirements for ABSL2.  This is the guiding manual for biosafety at research institutions.

Click here for Investigator Responsibilities Under the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules.

Scientific and field researchers doing research with biosafety concerns are required to take a short online questionnaire that will provide valuable feedback for any risks that may arise in their research.  The Director of the Risk Management Support Program, Mike Halko, will follow up with any suggestions or assistance that may be advisable.  The UA site for the questionnaire is here.
