UAA Professor Herb Schroeder, founder of the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program, received the 2005 Denali Award, the top honor bestowed on non-Natives by the Alaska Federation of Natives. The award was presented in Fairbanks on Saturday, Oct. 22, during the annual AFN Convention.
"Herb's contributions to UAA are immeasurable," said Chancellor Elaine P. Maimon. "That his achievements are recognized by AFN is a statement about the reach of his gifts. All of us at UAA congratulate him. We are inspired by his innovation and his vision for ANSEP, an education model for other disciplines."
The Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program, or ANSEP, is a successful program to recruit and retain Alaska Native students into engineering, and help them attain leadership roles in the profession. It is a comprehensive suite of Pre-College, Summer Bridging, and University Retention programs aimed at creating empowerment and excitement around careers in engineering and science. Including organized study groups, peer and professional mentoring, and organized group social activities. The program model has been exported to the University of Hawaii Manoa, the University of Washington and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
