It's A Cappella Festivella Time
By: Zac Clark Oct 3, 2005
The University Of Alaska Anchorage Concert Board A Cappella Festivella XII will feature Ac Rock and BYU’s Vocal Point in concert on Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wendy Williamson Auditorium.
Ac Rock (which stands for a cappella rock ‘n roll) is a group on the move, constantly changing and evolving to create a freshness and spontaneity that make each of their live performances one of a kind. Performing everyone’s favorites from the 50s through the 90s, this vocal band sings both the doo-wop standards audiences expect, along with more recent rock hits people might not expect to be performed a cappella. Their shows are an engaging mix of tightly-crafted music and freewheeling humor that pleases audiences of all ages.
Soon to start their 14th year together, Ac Rock has sung for all Chicago's favorite sports teams: the Cubs, the White Sox and the Bulls. They’ve appeared on TV and radio. They’ve opened for Wayne Brady and Bernie Mac. The members of Ac Rock are particularly pleased to be performing in Alaska, because it means that they have achieved their goal of singing in every non-contiguous state in the union.
The nine voices of Vocal Point extend the musical possibilities far beyond the capabilities of a traditional four-part quartet. The ensemble does not use any musical instruments; instead, they adapt a song’s complex instrumentation into an original vocal recreation. Audience members have been known to mistake the complex sounds for musical instruments during a performance.
The group performs for over 50,000 people each year and their campus shows regularly sell out weeks in advance. Vocal Point has performed for the San Francisco Giants at 3Com Stadium and for ambassadors from around the world in Washington, D.C. This season, Vocal Point will perform for the first time in Anchorage, Alaska.
