Congratulations!
* Mr. Patrick Nakada, a Japanese language major, who is currently an exchange student at Hokkaido University of Education, was granted a JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) scholarship, which will cover all of his living expenses during his exchange year (2012). Mr. Nakada is our second Japanese student (Our first recipient this year was Jeurgen Klotz), who receives this prestigious scholarship. Congratulations, Patrick!
* Spanish senior Erick Romig has been selected as the 2011-12 recipient of the UAA Seawolf Community Service Award. This award publicly honors individuals for their dedication and recognizes the important of their community involvement. Congratulations to Erick!
* Benjamin G. Woodland, a Fourty-Ninth State Fellow and double major German & International Studies, is the recipient of the 2012-13 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to Germany. Ben will receive $27,000 for one academic year and pursue studies in African languages at Universitaet Bayreuth in Bavaria. Universitaet Bayreuth is a well known research institution with a strong program in African studies. The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship requires advanced level skills in the target language as well as proven leadership abilities. Heartfelt congratulations to Ben!
* Jeurgen (Luke) Klotz, who is majoring in Japanese, has been selected to receive the 2011 JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Scholarship for his study abroad in Japan for one year. He will be attending the Hokkaido University of Education (HUE) in Japan from October 2011 for one year as an exchange student. This exchange program has been in existence since inception of the direct exchange program between UAA and HUE in 2006. Since then, UAA’s Japanese Program has been sending up to five outstanding students to HUE every year, and Luke is the fifth individual who has been awarded this prestigious scholarship. This JASSO scholarship will cover all of Luke’s living expenses in Japan with 80.000 Yen (about $11,500) per month for 11 months. Congratulations to Mr. Jeurgen (Luke) Klotz!
* Amber Vanderpool, a Languages major, and Courtney Corbet, an International Studies major, have both been awarded the UAA Kibrik and Bergeson Study or Reasearch in Russia Scholarship in the amounts of $5000 and $2500 respectively. Amber will study Russian language and culture in St. Petersburg, Russia for the full academic year. Cortney will spend fall semester in St. Petersburg studying Russian language and culture, and will graduate from UAA in December.
* Dr. Natasa Masanovic, has been presented with the 2011 Duden Award for her efforts in German instruction. The award was presented by the American Association for Teachers of German (AATG)/Alaska Chapter during the Annual German Students' Recognition celebration organized by the ASD.
* Wesley Burgess, a mechanical engineering student, will be spending the 2011-12 school year in Germany with a Congress-Bundestag scholarship. Wesley is our seventh student in six consecutive years to receive this prestigious award. Natasa Masanovic, associate professor in the German Languages Department, has worked with each of these students. Thank you!
* Two UAA Languages majors have been awarded the prestigious and highly competitive U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs 2011 Critical Language Scholarship. Rosalyn Thompson, double major Languages (Russian) and International Studies (Russia track) and Amber Vanderpool, major in Languages (Russian), will be fully funded to attend one of the CLS intensive language institutions in Russia this summer. * Dr. Susan Kalina, Professor of Russian, received the 2010 Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching at this fall's UAA Convocation.
* Dr. Hiroko Harada, Professor of Japanese, received the College of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award for her exemplary teaching.
* Dr. Patricia Fagan, Associate Professor of Spanish, was awarded the UAA Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching Award for 2010, and was also named 2010's Advisor of the Year for her work with the Spanish Club, La Tertulia.
* Dr. Natasa Masanovic, Associate Professor of German, was awarded a 2009 Alpha Sigma Alpha Professor of the Month Award, the 2008 UAA Faculty Exemplar Award and the 2007 College of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award for her exemplary work in teaching.
Languages Students Honored!
Nominated for the Diversity Action Council's Student Diversity Award, Erik J. Peterson, Japanese major, was selected as the top recipient and will soon receive recognition from the Diversity Action Council! Congratulations Erik!
Carolyn Rios, a student in second-year Russian, received an Honorable Mention in the National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest. Carolyn competed against more than 1,000 students from across the United States. Congratulations, Carolyn!
Craig Douglas, 2010 graduate of the Russian program, received the national 2010 Post-Secondary Russian Scholar Laureate Award. Craig was nominated unanimously for the award by the UAA Russian faculty. Congratulations, Craig!
Robin Ford, recent Languages and International Studies graduate, has received the American Association for Teachers of German 2010 Langenscheidt Award for her dedication to the promotion of the German language in Alaska. Congratulations, Robin!
Don Young Chon, Japanese major, has received a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship for 2010. Congratulations, Don!
Meredith Thatcher, Japanese major, recently was awarded in the UAA Student Showcase for her History 320 paper "The Shisengumi and Samurai Identity". Ms. Thatcher also recently passed Level Two of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, and was accepted into the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) program for 2010-2011. Congratulations, Meredith, and enjoy your year abroad!
Amy Voss, recent Languages graduate, received the 2010 UAA Diversity Award and is sharing the 2010 University Honors College UAA Discovery Award. Congratulations on your achievements, Amy!
Congratulations, Fulbright Scholars!
Language graduates Charles Beattie, Robin Ford and Amy Voss have been named Fulbright Scholars for 2010-2011, and will be will be spending the next academic year in Germany. Charles and Amy are recent graduates of the German program; Robin is a recent graduate of the German program and the International Studies program. Congratulations to all of you! We are proud of your accomplishments.
New Congress-Bundestag Scholar!
German student Heather Shelton has become the newest Languages recipient of the prestigious Congress-Bundestag scholarship. She is the sixth Languages student in the last five years to win this honor. Congratulations, Heather!
