Introduction

Paramedics provide prehospital emergency care to acutely ill or injured patients under medical authority of licensed physicians. Individuals interested in pursuing a career as a paramedic should possess significant strength to lift and carry victims, good use of hands and fingers, good coordination, good judgment and emotional stability, and ability to work confidently under pressure. Students successfully completing the PMED courses meet the U.S. Department of Transportation National Standards for a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic and are eligible to take the National Registry Examination required for licensure.

UAA Paramedical Technology

UAA's Paramedical Technology program is currently a degree completion program. Paramedical Technology courses are not currently taught at UAA. However, upon proof of NREMT Registered Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic registration, you may apply to UAA for 48 non-traditional certified experience credits to complete the Paramedical Technology courses needed for this degree.

EMT I is required prior to becoming a paramedic. EMT I, EMT II, EMT III, and general education requirement classes are taught at UAA.

Currently UAA-Kenai Peninsula College and UAF-Tanana Valley Campus offer paramedical technology degrees which include paramedic courses.

Please check with State of Alaska's Community Health & Emergency Medical Services for current paramedic training programs in Alaska or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs for current paramedic training programs nation wide.
