Course Description

This course will provide an in-depth review of human gross anatomy and relevant kinesiology for medical and/or health professionals. Participants will be immersed in a dynamic, hands-on, educational experience that will include case-based didactic and practical information in a relaxed environment that maximizes participant/faculty interaction. A significant portion of the course will involve dissection sessions in a human gross anatomy laboratory.

Intended Audience

This course is intended for allied health clinical professionals with previous exposure to pertinent coursework in anatomy. The structure of the course provides an opportunity for review of functional anatomy and application of that knowledge towards clinical treatment. 

Credit

The University of Alaska Anchorage is approved by the Alaska Physical Therapy Association to provide continuing education for physical and occupational therapists. Physical and occupational therapists requiring CE Units will receive appropriate credit (2.5 CEU). A certificate of attendance will be provided to other health care professionals requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.

David C. Pfeiffer, M.Sc., Ph.D.

David Pfeiffer is the Director of this Continuing Education Program and he will be responsible for the gross anatomy lectures and laboratory dissection sessions in this course. Dr. Pfeiffer received his BA in Biology from the University of North Carolina Charlotte in 1987 and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of British Columbia in 1990 and 1997 respectively. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biology at the University of Utah from 1997-98. In 2000 he joined the faculty of the University of Alaska Anchorage where he is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. He has taught gross anatomy to medical students, graduate students, physical and occupational therapy students, and undergraduate students. Dr. Pfeiffer has been the recipient of several teaching and research awards including the 2003 UAA Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and research awards from the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Bernadette Gillick
Bernadette Gillick, Ph.D. candidate, MS, PT

(Clinical) Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center - Seattle

Bernadette Gillick will be responsible for the clinical kinesiology lectures in this course series and will serve as a laboratory faculty member for dissections. She has held adjunct faculty positions at the University of Alaska Anchorage and Seattle University and has taught undergraduate courses in anatomy and physiology at both institutions. She has taught CME courses through the University of Alaska Anchorage since 2003. Ms. Gillick received her BA in Psychology and BS in Physical Therapy from Marquette University in 1991 and 1993 respectively. She received an Advanced MS in Neurologic Physical Therapy in 1997 at Finch University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. She has worked clinically at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago/Loyola University Medical Center, Providence Alaska Medical Center, Anchorage School District, and Childrens Hospital and Regional Medical Center of Seattle, WA. Ms. Gillick is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Rehabilitation Science/Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota. She is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society and the American Physical Therapy Association.

Registration and Fees

The registration fee is $500 per person. This fee includes all course materials, handouts, laboratory gloves, and use of cadavers, dissection tools, laboratory coats, and anatomy texts. The maximum number of participants for this course will be 25; therefore, early registration is advised. A letter of confirmation will be sent upon receipt of payment and completed registration form.

Cancellation Policy

The University of Alaska Anchorage reserves the right to cancel an educational program due to insufficient enrollment. In the unlikely event that UAA must cancel this course, UAA will refund the entire registration fee, but it is not responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses to participants, including fees assessed by airline/travel/lodging agencies.
