Each yearUAA produces, for external distribution, hundreds of brochures, posters, and other print and electronic materials over a broad spectrum of subjects and meeting a variety of requirements. For these publications to have a cumulative impact for the university they must have a reasonable degree of design unity. These image standards are designed to (1) unify the university and eliminate artificial divisions, (2) present a consistent and pleasing image to all of our constituencies, and (3) achieve efficiencies in producing publications and materials for the University of Alaska Anchorage.
The university does not intend that every publication look the same, only that each publication has common elements that show it is part of UAA. Correct application of these standards allows for continuation of the identities that the community campuses have forged with their geographic areas and that individual schools and colleges have created with their constituencies.
This image system embodies UAA’s "brand," the unique promise to students that sets us apart from all other institutions. We are truly progressive: always moving forward, challenging ourselves and our students to reach the next level of success. As a relatively young and modern institution with exciting cutting-edge programs and a growing national reputation, our progressive stance will help define our image for years to come. Your use of this image system should reflect our progressive philosophy.
Scope of the Standards
All academic, support, and service units whose operational funding is administered by the University of Alaska Anchorage fall within the scope of these standards. These standards apply to all UAA materials, including materials funded by sponsorships, grants, student fees, and other sources of funding.
Any information, whether in print or electronic form, published by an officially recognized university college, school, branch, department, office, project, program, or area is considered "official" and is subject to the requirements of this policy. Information published by student organizations or by individual faculty, staff members, or students is considered "unofficial" and may not carry the university logo, seal, lettermark, or wordmark.
No unauthorized wordmark, lettermark or graphic element may be used to represent the university or any of its colleges, schools, divisions, departments, programs, or offices.
The Official Name
The official and legal name of the institution is the University of Alaska Anchorage. All documents or publications produced by UAA departments must use this name. Do not use a comma, dash, or hyphen between Alaska and Anchorage. First references to the institution in printed or electronic form should use the official and legal name.
EEO/AA and Accreditation Statements
Federal law requires the following statement appear on all UAA print, multimedia, and web publications designed for external distribution.
UAA is an EEO/AA employer and educational institution.
An optional sentence may be added:
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, this material is available in alternate formats upon request.
The accreditation statement can also be included with the EEO/AA statement.
The University of Alaska Anchorage is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
These legally mandated statements will always be placed below the UAA wordmark.
University Stationery
Stationery includes printed letterhead, envelopes, and business cards. The letterhead is designed to reflect UAA's progressive image. The use of unit-specific logos on the official letterhead must conform to the rules outlined in the next section of these standards. Names of individuals may not be printed on any university stationery except business cards.
The university has a single style of business card. No unit-specific logos will be printed on business cards. The business card may include the employee’s name, title, and department, as well as up to three telephone numbers, physical address, and website.
Official UAA stationery may be ordered through GSS.
Uses of the UAA Lettermark with other organizational logos
In general, the university lettermark should appear by itself and not with other logos. However, when the university is in a cooperative venture with one or more other organizations, it may be appropriate to place the logos of these other organizations on the same page with the university logo. When this is done, the university lettermark should be larger than the other logos, or all logos on the page should be the same size.
Any other uses of the lettermark must be approved in advance by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Relations.
Uses of Unit-Specific Logos
The three community campuses of the University of Alaska Anchorage, Prince William Sound Community College, the Athletics department, and official UAA centers and institutes (listed in the current UAA catalog) are authorized to use their logos as distinct identifiers for their local populations. Whenever a campus, center, or institute uses their specific logo, the official university lettermark and one of the official wordmarks must also be used. The university lettermark should be larger than the other logos.
In very limited circumstances, a university unit may use a unit-specific logo. If a unit wants to use a unit-specific logo as a graphic identifier, the unit must send a request for approval to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Relations. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Whenever a unit-specific logo is used, the official university lettermark and wordmark must also be used. The university lettermark should be larger than the other logos.
This policy may be waived for small advertising specialty items (pens, pins, etc.)when a single organizational logo may be used.
Use with the University of Alaska Logo
UAA is a component of the University of Alaska (UA) system. As such, the UA logo has precedence when the UA logo and UAA lettermark are included in the same document. The UAA lettermark should not be larger than the UA logo, and there must be enough separation between the logo and lettermark to ensure legibility.
Standards for use of the UA logo are available from the University of Alaska System office.
Commercial Use of the UAA Image System
UAA's image system is unique and marketable, and consists of registered trademarks of the University of Alaska Anchorage. The name University of Alaska Anchorage, the acronym UAA (regardless of font used), the lettermark, the four wordmarks, and the Seawolf Logo are trademarks of the University of Alaska Anchorage and are reserved for official UAA use.
The image system must be properly presented and used for approved purposes only. The image system is copyrighted and licensed for use through the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC). The CLC enforces the licensing agreement for the university. Departments with questions regarding the use of the logo on manufactured items should contact the Director of Licensing in the Campus Bookstore.
