RHS awards for horticultural excellence
Gardening broadcaster and RHS member Roy Lancaster OBE VMH, presented the Society's top awards to 12 individuals at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show at a special awards dinner on 7 July 2008.
John Ravenscroft
John Ravenscroft received the Victoria Medal of Honour (VMH), the ultimate gardening accolade, for his plantsmanship, entrepreneurial talent and encyclopaedic knowledge of plants. A former RHS Council member and owner of Bridgemere Garden World (now part of the Wyevale chain), John has served the plant industry for over 40 years. Only 63 horticulturalists hold the VMH at any one time: to mark the length of Queen Victoria’s reign.
Other awards
Veitch Memorial Medals (VMM) go to Dr. James Beard and Michael John Nelson for their outstanding contribution to the advancement and improvement of the science and practice of horticulture. James is a leading horticultural figure with a specialism in turf-grass; and Michael is well known for his role in restoring the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall.
Lynette Joyce Randall, Ian Cooke, Mary Spiller and Fergus Garrett will all be awarded the RHS Associateship of Honour. With no more than a hundred being held at any one time, the Associateship of Honour is presented to British nationals who have rendered distinguished service to horticulture in the course of their working life.
The RHS Honorary Fellowship will be presented to Sir Kenneth Carlisle, a former Conservative MP and resident of Wykan Hall and Mary Margaret Rochford, the founder of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society. They have both shown great service to the RHS and like minded organisations.
Recipients of the Harlow Carr Medal, Ian Sandwell and Doug Bradbrook, will be honoured for their distinctive horticultural service to the North of England. Named after the RHS Garden, Harlow Carr, Doug receives the medal for his contributions to the bedding plant industry, while Ian’s contribution to the Horticultural Experimental Station near Kirkham earns him his accolade.
After a lifetime of continuous service to The University of Reading, Mr Peter Halliday, is set to receive the RHS award for 50 Years Long Service.
