Maurice Buthcher's small garden
The Giving Garden is a small productive kitchen garden designed for the active person who enjoys gardening for pleasure and also for its yield of fruit, herbs, vegetables and flowers. The idea for the garden comes from the need to use all space available to the best possible use, particularly for gardens of this size. But to also do it in an attractive way, to unite and enhance the planting giving the space an informal edge away from many preconceptions of how reserved gardens can be.

The Giving Garden has a degree of high maintenance but is small enough to be manageable. Visitors can wander around the garden by following the paving interspersed with herbs and flowers, around the fruit trees to the pergola at the far end. Take a seat while you admire the sights and smells. There is a small pool close to the seating area where you can enjoy the wildlife and the reflections from the mirror wall. The paving, mirror and some wooden elements of The Giving Garden are recycled and will also be re-recycled after the show. The planting scheme has been created to encourage and support wildlife, as well as provide a natural form of pest control.
This is Maurice Butcher’s first RHS garden. Maurice says, “I have a love of nature and prefer to be outside, I work within the gardening industry so to design was just a natural form of progression. I also think everyone has the right to enjoy good design and construction whatever their budget. What can be more gratifying than creating peoples dreams? This is the reason I design gardens.”
