As one of Ontario’s twenty-four public community colleges, Algonquin College is governed by a Board that strives to provide learners with high quality education and training for employment in the fast changing world of business, technology, health and community services.
The Board of Governors is composed of seventeen individuals: 12 external Governors who reflect the various sectors of the community served by the College; four internal Governors representing Students, Faculty, Support Staff and Administrative Staff plus the President. Two thirds of the members are Board-appointed, and one third of the members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The Board of Governors has all the powers and duties of a corporation under the Ontario Corporations Act, except where additions or modifications have been made through regulation under the Ministry of Colleges and Universities Act.
In practice, the Board of Governors does not manage the College on a day to day basis. That task is delegated to the College Administration, headed by the President and CEO, who is appointed by the Board of Governors.
Board members play an important role, flowing from their responsibility as trustees of the public interest. Examples of Board activities include:
- Adoption of policies for the delivery of high quality instruction and efficient management of College resources;
- Approval of programs of instruction, operating and capital budgets;
- Monitoring of College performance in key educational and administrative areas;
- Appointment of advisory committees to ensure continuing relevance of College programs.
The Board carries out these activities through monthly Board meetings which are open to the public. Agendas and minutes will be posted on this site.
All members of the community served by Algonquin College are invited to familiarize themselves with the offerings of the College. We are confident that our programs of instruction will continue to provide students with the tools they need to make a productive contribution to society.
