Frequently Asked Questions by Students and Faculty
| What is Mobile Learning? |
Mobile Learning is a method of program delivery at Algonquin College which enables students to use mobile devices to enhance their learning experience in and out of the classroom, obtain and work with course materials, participate in collaborative online environments and become skilled, confident users of the technologies used within an educational environment and workplace. |

| What is a Mobile Learning Program? |
A Mobile Learning Program integrates mobile and web-based technologies into its delivery structure and culture. These technologies are used to enhance learning, foster collaboration and prepare learners for a career in which information is available anytime and anyplace. Students are required to own and use a mobile device that meets or exceeds the specifications determined by the program. These requirements have not yet been determined for Fall 2013. Requirements will be posted by June 2013. |
| What is the difference between Mobile and Online Learning? |
Online Learning students are in a different physical location from their instructor, and through technology, they are able to connect and interact with course content, instructors and fellow students. Online learning can be offered both synchronously and asynchronously. Mobile Learning refers specifically to the addition of a mobile device to the on-campus learning environment. Mobile Learning courses use various delivery methods, such as face-to-face, hybrid or online. |
| How does it work? |
Students in Mobile Learning Programs are required to own a mobile device that meets minimum standards set out by their program. |
| Which programs are Mobile? |
By Fall 2013, nearly 90% of all full time programs, and over 12,000 students will be Mobile. |
| Why is it significant? |
Mobile Learning prepares students to be anytime, anywhere learners and to access and interpret career-related information which is always available and evolving. Knowledge of how to search for and interpret evolving information prepares students to become lifelong learners. |
| What do I need to do to be ready for Mobile Learning? |
As faculty and staff, you can prepare for this initiative through your willingness to be innovative and supportive of the role information and mobile technologies play in the life of today’s students. Collaborating and sharing information with colleagues, attending professional development workshops, accessing online information, and asking for help when you need it are just some of the ways you can prepare. |
| What is a Mobile classroom? |
A mobile classroom, is an upgraded e-classroom with enhanced wireless access, network drops, power management and a touch screen monitor at the instructor’s station. There are currently 57 mobile classrooms at Algonquin, and over 70 more are scheduled to be converted in 2013. |
| Will the students have to bring their laptops to class all the time? |
No The use of the laptop in the classroom environment is ultimately at the discretion of the course instructor. |
| Should the mobile device be used for structured learning and mandatory learning activities in every scheduled class |
The laptop is a resource and ought to be used when it offers an advantage to the current activities or when there is a clear reason for its use. This may be a planned and deliberate situation, or dynamic as per the flow of classroom activities |
| How will I teach when students have their mobile devices open in front of them for the entire class? |
It is important to set clear expectations on mobile device usage early, during the first class. Structured and unstructured learning can occur with and without laptops. When learning without laptops is deliberate and planned, there should be open communications within the classroom and an expectation to ‘put aside’ the laptop or to simply close the lid. |
| What if a student brings a tablet/cellphone and not a laptop? How will they connect with what we are doing in class? |
Each program of study has recommended hardware requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they purchase or have access to the correct type of device. Information is available: All other types of mobile devices, while functional, may have limitations related to completion of learning activities. As such, mobile devices other than the recommended hardware requirements should be considered as secondary mobile devices. For further guidance, please review: General Guidelines: Use of Mobile Devices for Course Work (doc) |
| How does mobile learning change what I teach? |
The curriculum content that you teach will remain the same; the content is not generally affected by the tools students have to access course materials. However, the way the content is administered may change. As a faculty member (and as a faculty team teaching in a program of study), you may consider options to substitute, augment or modify the way content is made available and or how students engage with the materials. The use of eTexts, online resources or interactive digital activities will introduce new learning opportunities. Speaking with your CIS (Curriculum Implementation Services) rep is always a good idea. Find contact information for your CIS program representative at: |
| Does mobile learning mean the students don’t have to come to class? |
Students are encouraged to attend all scheduled classes. |
| Can I use tools, such as Google Docs, WordPress, and Evernote for student assignments and activities? |
Yes. Please bear in mind that information pertaining to the identity of students or the progress within a course is considered confidential. Steps must be taken to ensure that privacy and security of information is maintained. |
| Will PT (Part-time) faculty be provided with a laptop (or mobile device) if they are hired to teach in a mobile program? |
PT faculty will be issued laptops through the College’s evergreening process, and a limited number of departmentally-held devices will be available for loan. In general, new devices will not be issued to PT faculty. |
| What does the $150/term mobile learning fee provide for? |
Algonquin is providing an enhanced learning experience through Mobile Learning programs. Students have access to specific software as part of the MLP implementation. The available software is part of student’s takeaway upon graduation; students own the software licenses, and are permitted to download the version in effect at graduation. Laptop loaners are made available for short-term emergency situations, along with technical support for their laptop and mobile devices. MLP students will learn in mobile classrooms that include wireless connections, smart technologies and flexible learning spaces. |
| How do program areas determine the most appropriate type of mobile device? |
The selection of the mobile device will depend on the types of software and online resources each program area expects their students to make use of. Program areas unsure of what device is most appropriate are encouraged to talk directly with their CIS (Curriculum Implementation Services) representative. Find contact information for your CIS program representative at: |
| What if students do not have access to a mobile device at the beginning of the semester? |
Students in Mobile Learning programs are expected to have a mobile device at the beginning of the term. The College will have a limited number of devices that will be made available to students through the LRC (Learning Resources Centre) on a short term, on-campus only, loan basis. Students in Mobile Learning programs who own a laptop that is in for repairs are entitled to borrow a laptop from the LRC (Learning Resource Centre) for up to two weeks. |
