Lehman College and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) have announced the launch of the Bronx Business Bridge, a pilot program to help low- to mid-skill residents of New York City start or expand their own businesses. Through the Bronx Business Bridge, Lehman College’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies will administer business support programming, a loan program and affordable incubator work space for low-income entrepreneurs. It is part of New York City’s and Lehman College’s ongoing effort to grow economic opportunities and stimulate economic activity in the Bronx.

Under a brilliant blue sky and thousands of joyful smiles, Lehman College conducted its 46th annual Commencement exercises on Thursday, May 29. The College conferred more than 2,800 graduate and undergraduate degrees, one of the largest classes in the history of Lehman College. Addressing the graduates as they prepare for their first post-college steps was Letitia James, Class of 1982 and Public Advocate for the City of New York. She remembered her Lehman College experience as transformative and encouraged the graduates to take control of their futures. “Lehman poured into me far more than I consciously sought or even imagined,” said Ms. James.

Lehman College congratulates Zarin Tasnim, a graduating senior in the Macaulay Honors College at Lehman who has been accepted to the prestigious and highly competitive Fulbright Scholarship program for English Teaching Assistants for 2014-15. This summer Tasnim will embark on a one-year or 13-month exchange program in Korea, where she will teach conversational English to elementary school children or middle and high school students.

With spring comes a clearer picture of the 2014 – 2015 budget after an agreement between Governor Andrew Cuomo and the state Senate and Assembly. The budget includes improvements to the operating and capital budgets of Lehman College and the City University of New York (CUNY), and programming that will strengthen the opportunities for students.

Janitza Medina, a sophomore and potential psychology and film major, is Lehman’s newest Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship winner. Medina competed with over 125 students from 12 participating colleges for the spot. Sophomore Aidan Cooper is her alternate. The first in her family to attend college, Medina is excited for the opportunity. “The J.K. Watson Fellowship is one of the few instances in my life that has given me a sense of security in terms of my future career,” says Medina whose family is originally from Puerto Rico.

The High School of American Studies at Lehman College has been named the #1 public high school in New York State by U.S. News & World Report. It was ranked #32 in the nation. The school specializes in American history, and offers Advanced Placement courses in English, calculus and chemistry. The High School of American Studies has a 100 percent participation rate on Advanced Placement tests and a passing rate of 94 percent.

Lehman College has been selected by the American Council on Education (ACE) to participate in the Change and Innovation Lab (CIL), a groundbreaking program to help colleges and universities implement significant and sustainable initiatives to increase the number of first-generation and nontraditional students who gain a college degree. Lehman is one of nine institutions that will work during the 18-month CIL project to implement concrete steps on their campuses and identify how some of these practices can be applied broadly at colleges and universities across the country. The project is supported by a $400,000 grant from Lumina Foundation.

“Jazz for Lehman College” was established to raise funds for scholarships of the City University of New York. Located in the North Bronx, Lehman serves one of the largest Puerto Rican and other Latino college populations in the United States.

Lehman College is one of 150 higher education institutions in 41 states to join the Institute of International Education (IIE)’s Generation Study Abroad initiative, a five-year program aimed at increasing the number of undergraduates who travel abroad for study.
At Lehman, some 45 to 50 students participate in an international experience through the College’s Study Abroad Program each year. The goal is to double that number by the end of the five-year initiative. In the coming weeks and months, the College will devise new strategies to attract students to the program, including the addition of a “study abroad” category under scholarships for donor contributions.

Graduate students, supervised by faculty members, offer treatment in various communication disorders in children and adults. Through her work in her neurolinguistics lab, Prof. Goral and her research team strive to ensure that the treatment strategies that they recommend indeed work.

Lehman College announced today the sudden passing of Dr. Barbara Jacobson, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology. She was 74. Dr. Jacobson’s research focused on education and social mobility. She worked on major data sets related to the experiences of students at the City University of New York (CUNY). At Lehman College, Dr. Jacobson was known for her passion for the liberal arts and for her work as chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.

The opposite of helicopter journalism, these images are a personal exploration of regular people in a part of the world most often depicted in crisis. Spanning more than three decades, the photographs depict the daily life of three families in Burkina Faso, West Africa, and show how the country has evolved through those years.
