Spotlight on the
Jewish Studies Program
Last Fall, Rabbi Manny Vinas, the Marvin & Edward Kaplan Lecturer in in this seminar, a five day trip to the Dominican Jewish communities. Below, three of our majors (from Israel, Bangladesh and the Czech Republic) meet in Sosua with Mr. Luis Hess, now 98 and the first settler in Sosua from the German-Jewish community.
We are deeply grateful to Mr. Jay Hershenson, Vice Chancellor for University Relations and Secretary of the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York, for funding this seminar. Many thanks as well to the Dominican Studies Institute of CUNY, for helping us with the many details of our itinerary in the Dominican Republic. We plan on continuing these advanced seminars for our majors with a new class in Spring 2008 on “The Jews of Morocco”.
