Graduate Programs
The graduate programs in Secondary Spanish Education seek to provide secondary school teacher candidates with the expertise in the teaching of Spanish language, both as foreign language and a heritage language, and of Peninsular, Latin American and Latino literatures and cultures. While preparing for certification, candidates will learn to develop academically, linguistically and culturally enriching Spanish language education programs and to implement the necessary teaching practices related to these programs.
We offer four different graduate programs:

• Spanish 7 - 12 for Spanish Majors (35 credits)

Candidates who have graduated with an undergraduate degree (B.A.) in Spanish comprised of a minimum of 30 upper-level credits in Spanish can apply for this program. It provides candidates who have a solid background in Spanish language, literature, and culture with the knowledge in education foundations and secondary Spanish education required for initial certification in Spanish.

• One Spanish linguistics graduate course – 3 cr.
• One Spanish literature graduate course – 3 cr.

• Spanish 7 – 12 for Initially Non-Spanish Certified (38 credits)

Candidates who already hold initial certification in an area other than Spanish and demonstrate proficiency in Spanish may apply for this program. (Students with initial certification in an area other than Spanish will end up with professional certification in that area and initial certification in Spanish.) The program provides candidates with more specific courses in Secondary Spanish Education required for initial certification in Spanish.

Prerequisites: B.A. with a major or minor in education; NYS initial certification in an area other than Spanish; liberal arts distribution requirements, including foreign language; 15 credits in advanced (300 level or above) undergraduate Spanish courses, including a grammar course and a composition course*; EDUC 20500 (Adolescent Learning and Development) or equivalent, including 15 hours of fieldwork**; LAST***

* Candidates who have not met this requirement must take these courses before admission to the program. They must meet with an advisor for suggestions.
** Candidates may satisfy the EDUC 20500 requirement by taking EDUC 0500A while enrolled in the program with permission of advisor.

Candidates with an undergraduate degree in a field other than Spanish and with no education background may apply for this program after demonstrating proficiency in Spanish. It provides candidates with the educational experience and the content knowledge required for initial certification in Spanish.

Prerequisites: B.A.; liberal arts distribution requirements, including foreign language; 15 credits in advanced (300 level or above) undergraduate Spanish courses, including a grammar course and a composition course*; LAST**

Candidates who have graduated with an undergraduate degree (B.A.) in Secondary Spanish Education and who hold Initial Certification in Spanish for grades 7-12 may apply for this program. It provides candidates with more advanced education and Secondary Spanish Education courses resulting in professional certification in the field.

Prerequisites: B.A. in Secondary Spanish Education or B.A in Spanish with a minor in Secondary Spanish Education; Initial Certification in 7-12 Spanish; liberal arts distribution requirements; EDUC 20500 (Adolescent Learning and Development) or equivalent, including 15 hours of fieldwork*; LAST**

* Candidates may satisfy the EDUC 20500 requirement by taking EDUC 0500A while enrolled in the program with permission of advisor.

Other Requirements

• The CST Exam (Spanish)* has to be taken and passed after completing 9 credits. This is a requirement in order to register in EDSE 0200I (Master's Project).
• Some applicants will be asked to submit scores of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) as part of the admission process. A score of Advanced-Low or higher is required.
