This course is designed to provide a wide and historical-anthropological overview of key facets of Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) societies. We will examine their cultural and historical development as well as the role of power and inequality in this development. In addition, we will be reviewing how LAC colonial experiences have structured differences in race, class, and ethnic/national identities.
You will impart an understanding of the lifeways of the various social and cultural issues concerning peoples of and from LAC. The course is structured in such a way as to vary your learning experience—all will read a textbook, you will read ethnographic texts, and you will research independently. The class will also provide the opportunity to share and form groups with your fellow classmates.

We will investigate the angels and demons, real and imagined, that populate Jewish American texts of the second half of the twentieth century. We will discuss the ways in which such manifestations should be understood. Do demons represent history’s calamities? Do angels stand in for the high moments? How are characters informed by their relationship to their heritage? How do they confront their inner angels and demons?
