Founded in 1992 at The City College of New York, the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York is the first and only university-based research institute in the United States devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent.

Sarah Aponte is Chief Librarian of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Library at The City College of New York and Assistant Professor at The City College Libraries, teaching courses Dominican Studies. She founded the Dominican Library in 1994 with donations of books and other materials by the Council of Dominican Educators.
She is the author of Dominican Migration to the United States 1970-1997: An Annotated Bibliography (1999). Her recent publications include contributions to Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States and the Encyclopedia Latina: History, Culture, Society. In addition to her teaching and writing, Aponte conducts workshops and presentations on Dominican Studies at public and private schools throughout the United States. She is a member of the Seminar on the Acquisitions of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) and the Library Association of the City University of New York (LACUNY).
Aponte holds an M.L.S. in Library and Information Sciences from Queens College; an M.S.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from Baruch College; a B.A. in International Studies from the City College of New York; and an A.A. in Liberal Arts from Hostos Community College.
