Happy Anniversary, CCNY Campus

2007 marks the Centennial of the opening of The City College of New York’s campus on Hamilton Heights in Harlem.  CCNY came uptown after it had outgrown its original facility, the Free Academy building at 23^rd Street and Lexington Ave.  The new campus, designed by George B. Post, gave the College a “plant second to none,” and it is considered one of the finest examples of neo-Gothic architecture at any institution in the United States.

While Post’s design was an aesthetic triumph, it proved to be a mechanical disaster, which required a massive effort to restore the buildings’ structural integrity and appearance.  On these pages, we tell the story of the campus’ development, growth and restoration and take a peek at what the future holds in store.  We also invite our Alumni to share your memories of the Campus and its historic buildings.
