Visual Communication Design Program
The VCD program fosters critical and creative thinking, skill building, and visual literacy. Through images and text, students learn to combine message, meaning, and form to create memorable experiences and communicate effectively. Visual communication design is vital in every aspect of society, from industry and commerce, to community organizations and government, to art and self-expression.
Visual Communication Design Students
In WOU's small classes, students work closely with faculty in a supportive, rigorous environment to gain creative and practical design skills in multiple media. Courses emphasize effective learning, collaboration, and technological expertise. Projects engage design challenges using a multitude of materials -- brochures, packaging, posters, websites, apps, exhibition displays, video, animation, and more.
Visual Communication Design students begin with art foundations courses, then continue with fundamentals of typography, photography, and digital images. They develop knowledge of design processes and theory, hone technical proficiencies, and incorporate research methods into their design work. Collaborative projects engage the campus and surrounding community, connecting students to the social role of design.
Upper Division Courses
Upper division VCD courses provide advanced experience with software and technology while equipping students with valuable skills for idea generation, critial thinking, and self-direction. Spring term before graduating, each student prepares a portfolio, résumé, and self-promotional materials as a platform for launching into the professional world.
