Scholarships

Diversity Commitment Scholarship

At Western Oregon University, we believe a diverse campus community will improve the overall quality of education our students receive by offering a mix of experiences, opinions and viewpoints. We are committed to recognizing and supporting outstanding students from diverse cultural, educational and economic backgrounds and with unique talents, interests and life experiences.

In order to be considered for this award,

you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Awarded to high school seniors and transfer students
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • New Freshmen Only: Meet freshmen admission requirements
  • Transfer Only: Complete a minimum of 24 transferable credits and meet transfer admission requirements
  • Scholarships are $3,500 per year
  • Renewable for up to four years for new freshmen and up to two years for transfer students

Continuing WOU students are not eligible to apply for this scholarship. Continuing WOU students should apply for scholarships using the WOU General Scholarship Application available at www.wou.edu/scholarships.

Actuarial Diversity Scholarship

  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered or the child of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered parent(s);
  • Students in Oregon and Southwest Washington; in need of financial assistance and able to provide clear financial need statements;
  • Be accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited educational program beyond the secondary level which has an established non-discrimination policy that includes sexual and gender minority groups;

Eligibility Criteria:

  • an underrepresented minority in the accounting profession (e.g., Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino, Native American or Asian American).
  • enrolled as a fullā€time undergraduate student (12 semester hours or equivalent) or graduate student (9 semester hours or equivalent). Exceptions are made for students completing their final semesters of study.
  • completed at least 30 semester hours (or equivalent) of college coursework, including at least 6 semester hours (or equivalent) in accounting.

Undergraduate level:

  • must be a declared accounting major.
  • Graduate Student Criteria:
  • must have been accepted to a masters level accounting, finance, taxation or other related masters program for the 2011-2012 academic year.
  • maintained a minimum of 3.3 GPA (both cumulative and in major courses).

Eligibility Criteria:

  • African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American.
    Citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States.
  • Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED.
  • Will enroll for the first time at a U.S. located, accredited college or university in the fall of 2011 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student (with the exception of students pursuing a high school diploma while concurrently enrolled). First-time college enrollees can also be GED recipients.
  • Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities.
  • Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.
  • Have completed and submitted all three required forms: the student’s application (Nominee Personal Information Form), an evaluation of the student’s academic record (Nominator Form) and an evaluation of the student’s community service and leadership activities (Recommender Form) by the deadline.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Lehman Scholarship candidates must be of excellent character and be able to present strong academic records, test scores, and personal essays.  A candidate must have a demonstrable record of community and school involvement that reveals exceptional leadership potential with a capacity to work well in diverse settings.  Moreover, she/he must provide strong recommendations from teachers, community representatives, or employers.

Ron Brown Scholarship (High School Seniors Only)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States. Ron Brown Scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline. More than 250 students have been designated as Ron Brown Scholars since the inception of the Program.
  • Current college students are not eligible to apply.

National Association of Black Journalists

  • All applicants must be a student member of NABJ.
  • All applicants must be a journalism major or pursuing a career in journalism.

  • Previous NABJ scholarship winners are not eligible to reapply.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • African American (Black).
  • Enrolled full-time in any four-year college or university in the United States.
  • A junior who will be a B.S. or B.A. degree candidate in the 2011-2012 academic year.
  • A life sciences, physical sciences, or engineering major. (Applicants majoring in the physical sciences must have completed two semesters of organic chemistry by the end of the 2010-11 academic year). First professional (Pharm.D., D.V.M., D.D.S., etc.) majors are ineligible.
  • A student with a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Committed to and eligible for the summer internship at a Merck facility.
  • A citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Through the generosity of corporate and individual donors, the APS is able to offer the APS Scholarship for Minority Undergraduate Physics Majors

Eligibility Requirements

  • Any African-American, Hispanic American, or Native American U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is majoring or planning to major in physics, and who is a high school senior, college freshman, or sophomore is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

MIGRANT FARMWORKER BACCALAUREATE SCHOLARSHIP

Total Scholarship Funds:
Amount of Each Scholarship: $2,000 a year for three years

Purpose: To provide financial support to a deserving student with a history of migrating for employment in agriculture who has successfully completed at least one year of college. This support will cover expenses beyond that which the youth receives through federal, state and other scholarship assistance. The scholarship is designed to assist the youth in obtaining a baccalaureate degree without being encumbered with substantial debt.

Undergraduate (current freshmen, sophomores, juniors and non-graduating seniors ONLY!) applicants meeting the following criteria and completing the application will be considered for THE LAGRANT FOUNDATION (TLF) scholarship:

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident and a member of one of the following ethnic groups: African American, Asian Pacific American, Hispanic or Native American/Alaska Native.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student at a four-year, accredited institution, carrying a total of 12 units or more per semester/quarter.  Applicant must have a minimum of 2.75 GPA* and MUST major in a field of study that has an emphasis on public relations, marketing or advertising or must minor in communications with desire to pursue a career in public relations, marketing or advertising.
