Scholarships

Diversity Commitment Scholarship

At Western Oregon University, we believe a diverse campus community will improve the overall quality of education our students receive by offering a mix of experiences, opinions and viewpoints. We are committed to recognizing and supporting outstanding students from diverse cultural, educational and economic backgrounds and with unique talents, interests and life experiences.

In order to be considered for this award,

you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Awarded to high school seniors and transfer students
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • New Freshmen Only: Meet freshmen admission requirements
  • Transfer Only: Complete a minimum of 24 transferable credits and meet transfer admission requirements
  • Scholarships are $3,500 per year
  • Renewable for up to four years for new freshmen and up to two years for transfer students

Continuing WOU students are not eligible to apply for this scholarship. Continuing WOU students should apply for scholarships using the WOU General Scholarship Application available at www.wou.edu/scholarships.

Actuarial Diversity Scholarship

  • African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American.
    Citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States.
  • Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED.
  • Will enroll for the first time at a U.S. located, accredited college or university in the fall of 2011 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student (with the exception of students pursuing a high school diploma while concurrently enrolled). First-time college enrollees can also be GED recipients.
  • Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities.
  • Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.
  • Have completed and submitted all three required forms: the student’s application (Nominee Personal Information Form), an evaluation of the student’s academic record (Nominator Form) and an evaluation of the student’s community service and leadership activities (Recommender Form) by the deadline.

Student of Color Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Plan to enroll or are enrolled in full- or half-time undergraduate or full-time graduate- or professional-degree coursework at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational/technical school. GED recipients also are eligible. Students must plan to enroll or be enrolled beginning with the fall-2011 term through Feb. 1, 2012.
  • If studying abroad, are attending or planning to attend a postsecondary institution that is eligible to participate in student aid programs under Title IV of the federal Higher Education Act.
  • Have an annual adjusted gross family income of $35,000 or less, as documented on a 2010 federal 1040 income-tax return on which the applicant is claimed as a federal tax exemption.
  • Are U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens. Students studying in the U.S. on an F1 visa are not eligible. Eligible noncitizens must be permanent U.S. resident aliens with a Green Card, or refugees with a Departure Record (Form I-94) from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services showing one of the following designations:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Lehman Scholarship candidates must be of excellent character and be able to present strong academic records, test scores, and personal essays.  A candidate must have a demonstrable record of community and school involvement that reveals exceptional leadership potential with a capacity to work well in diverse settings.  Moreover, she/he must provide strong recommendations from teachers, community representatives, or employers.

Ron Brown Scholarship (High School Seniors Only)

    b) current undergraduate, graduate and professional students
    c) community college students (must be AB540)
    Low income students must reside and study in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles Area (Specifically South Central Los Angeles, Pico Union, East Los Angeles) and San Fernando Valley.
    Applicants must be willing to give back to the community by becoming a mentor to a high school student or completing the equivalent of 52 community service hours assigned by SALEF.

Google Scholarship Program

The Google Scholarship Program offers funds to students studying computer science or computer engineering who are juniors or seniors in college or pursuing a Master's or PhD. Selected scholars will be invited to an all-expenses paid trip to the Google Headquarters in California in January 2011.

Through the generosity of corporate and individual donors, the APS is able to offer the APS Scholarship for Minority Undergraduate Physics Majors

Eligibility Requirements

  • Any African-American, Hispanic American, or Native American U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is majoring or planning to major in physics, and who is a high school senior, college freshman, or sophomore is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

MIGRANT FARMWORKER BACCALAUREATE SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial support to a deserving student with a history of migrating for employment in agriculture who has successfully completed at least one year of college. This support will cover expenses beyond that which the youth receives through federal, state and other scholarship assistance. The scholarship is designed to assist the youth in obtaining a baccalaureate degree without being encumbered with substantial debt.

Undergraduate (current freshmen, sophomores, juniors and non-graduating seniors ONLY!) applicants meeting the following criteria and completing the application will be considered for THE LAGRANT FOUNDATION (TLF) scholarship:

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident and a member of one of the following ethnic groups: African American, Asian Pacific American, Hispanic or Native American/Alaska Native.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student at a four-year, accredited institution, carrying a total of 12 units or more per semester/quarter.  Applicant must have a minimum of 2.75 GPA* and MUST major in a field of study that has an emphasis on public relations, marketing or advertising or must minor in communications with desire to pursue a career in public relations, marketing or advertising.

Offer four scholarships a year exclusively to college students (and soon-to-be college students) who are members of racial or ethnic minority groups. StraightForward Media is committed to creating educational opportunities for those to whom traditional opportunities have been closed in the past.
Eligibility requirements for the Minority Scholarships is wide open. Our scholarships are open to current and prospective students at community colleges, universities, technical/vocational schools, and continuing education programs.
