Welcome to WOU's Veterans Connection Program. The Veterans Connection Program was developed to identify faculty and staff across campus who are interested in welcoming/mentoring students who have served in the military. Statement: Hi, and welcome to WOU. I have employed and assisted returning troops adjust to civilian life and civilian academic life. This assistance has been with WOU students, family, friends and friends of my children; from all five branches of the military. Currently, my sister is the director of the Misawa Airman & Family Readiness Center in Japan, so I too have excellent resources to aide you in your transition. With me you will find a compassionate listener; someone who will assist you in identifying resources that will enable your successful transition back into civilian life and civilian academic life. Statement: I am a former Army Officer who was commissioned at Western Oregon after graduating in 1987. I served on active duty from 1987 to 1990 as a First Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps. I was a part of the first group of five who helped bring ROTC from Oregon State to Western Oregon. Proud to be Wolf, proud to be a veteran and honored to be a resource for you!

Statement: My father was an Army medic. My uncle was a fighter pilot, flying Sky-hawk jets on the USS Coral Sea. 18 years after he was shot down over the Vietnamese jungle, his remains were finally returned to my family. My husband also served in Vietnam for the Air Force. I am an Educational Adviser in the Student Enrichment Program and would be delighted to assist our student veterans in any way I can. Statement: The Communication Studies department offers a 1 credit two-day workshop on communicating effectively with veterans (COM 399: VeteranSpeak Workshop) taught by Maj. Paul Evans (Air Force, Oregon Air National Guard). If you know people who would benefit from a richer understanding of the culture and communication of contemporary veterans, please let them know of this course offering.

Statement: My time in the Air Force was spent with the 142nd Security Forces Squadron located at the Portland Air Base in Oregon. After leaving the military I continued working in law enforcement while studying criminal justice here at WOU, completing both a BS and MA. During my first few years at WOU I worked as one of the VA Certifying Officials in the Office of the Registrar and assisted veterans with their education benefits. My current work at WOU is focused primarily on student success and advising. Feel free to come say hello!
