The Western Oregon University Health and Wellness Center is under the division of Student Affairs, which provides a variety of fun-filled, health-promoting, physical and recreational activities conducive to wellness and personal growth. The Health and Wellness Center provides programs and services in the areas of intramural sports, open recreation, fitness, aquatics, special events, equipment checkout, reservation of facilities, and instructional programs.
The Health and Wellness Center structures opportunities to facilitate active campus involvement focused on improving intellectual and social competencies necessary to assume a productive role in society. We partner with others in the Western Oregon University community to help students establish a strong sense of belonging and enrich their overall educational experience.

The Health and Wellness Center is a 45,000 square foot addition to the Old P.E. gymnasium and Wolverton Memorial Swimming Pool, comprised of a two-court gymnasium with an elevated track, two racquetball courts, three multipurpose rooms, a 2,400 square foot strength and weight training area, a 3,600 square foot cardiovascular training area, a 40 foot high by 40 foot wide rock climbing wall, locker rooms for the recreation facility, an equipment check-out area, lounge areas with wireless internet capabilities, the remodeled pool and additional therapy pool, and Old P.E. gym.
A generous gift from the estate of Grant Sylvester Wolverton, in memory of his parents, early Monmouth pioneers, enabled the Wolverton Pool project in 1954. The dedication of Wolverton Memorial Swimming Pool took place on Sunday, April 24, 1955, under the administration of Roy E. Lieuallen. With the expansion of the Health and Wellness Center the Wolverton Memorial Swimming Pool has been updated and a therapy pool has been added. Continuing with its original vision, the Aquatic Center will be open and available for teaching swimming, fitness and aquatic safety to the general public.
The goal of Outdoor Programs is to bring the student, faculty and staff, alumni, and the general Monmouth/Independence community to the great outdoors of Oregon. The Outdoor Program now housed within the Health and Wellness Center has expanded to provide outdoor rental equipment from the generocity of the 2011 Incidential Fee Committee. We provide activities, events, and trips you will not want to miss.
The Campus Recreation Intramural (IM) Sports program is a popular extracurricular activity designed to provide all eligible students, faculty and staff with numerous opportunities to engage in both competitive and non-competitive organized recreational sports leagues, tournaments and special events. Each fall, winter and spring term, there are a wide variety of programs ranging from team sports to individual and dual sports. Sports such as flag football, basketball and volleyball to tennis, golf and racquetball, there's an opportunity for everyone to get involved. Campus Recreation Intramural (IM) Sports program now integrated into the Health and Wellness Center provides the perfect opportunity to stay physically active, meet new people, relieve stress, have fun and continue playing the sports you grew up loving.
