Career Transitions

Going through career transitions can be tough, but we are here to help. Are you thinking of a career change? Or do you just need a refresher on developing effective résumés and cover letters or sharpening your interview skills? Whatever the need, SLCD will provide the one-on-one interaction our alumni deserve.

Assessments

Career and personal assessments consider skills, values, interests, personality traits and other factors to help determine potential career areas. An assessment can help you explore your interests and possibilities as you consider a career transition.

It is important that you work one-on-one with an advisor to determine which assessment will give you the most effective information to help in your career decisions. Call our office to talk with, or meet with, a career counselor.

Résumés & Cover Letters

If you've been in the professional field for a while, it may have been some time since you updated your résumé. Make sure that you are identifying your skills and successes in the workplace to ensure the effectiveness of your résumé. If you are in the local area, you can drop by between the hours of 8am and 5pm for a resume review with our trained Peer Career Advisors. Or, you can make an appointment with a career counselor by calling 503-838-8432.

Résumé and Cover Letter Guide provides details on how to write an effective résumé and cover letter. This guide walks you through the basics of what to include, formats, effective words to use, do's and don'ts and real world examples. Also available are sample résumé guides  and sample letters.

Interviewing

Has it been a while since you last interviewed? Do you need a refresher? Don't worry! All it takes is some practice to get comfortable again in the interview setting. Below are resources that will help you gain the confidence and understanding you need to sell your strengths and get that job offer.

  • Mock Interviews are the best method for fine-tuning your interviewing skills. A counselor will treat you as if you are in an actual interview with questions related to your field. The interview will be reviewed, pointing out highlights and areas for improvement.
