Our long-established strong priority of student learning and development makes WOU a great choice for every student wanting to be challenged and supported in their academic development as a person who is afforded the respect of being known by their name, not an identification number or as just another student.

For students transferring to WOU a number of customized services and support mechanisms have been developed to facilitate a successful transition to our university. These complement our small classes, innovative services, and continual focus upon student success.

Transfer student admission requirements

1. Students with 36 or more transferable, college-level quarter hour credits (24 semester hours) must have a cumulative 2.25 grade point average or higher in all college-level work attempted and be in good standing at all prior institutions attended. Transfer applicants are required to have a writing course beginning with Writing 121 (or the equivalent) with a grade of C- or better; and college algebra or above with a grade of C- or better, or the equivalent of Math 105.
2. Students who have earned between 12 and 35 transferable quarter hours must meet both freshman and transfer admission requirements. Students who have earned fewer than 12 transferable quarter hours must meet freshman admission requirements. ACT or SAT Reasoning Exam scores are not required for transfer applicants with less than 36 transferable, college-level quarter hours who graduated prior to 2008 with a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.75 or higher.
3. Transfer applicants who obtain an Oregon Transfer Module (OTM), Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree (AAOT), or Associate of Science Oregon Transfer Degree (ASOT) from an Oregon community college are admissible with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00.
4. WOU requires two years of the same high school-level second language with a grade of C- or above, or two terms of a college-level second language with a grade of C- or above, or acceptable performance on proficiency-assessment options. Demonstrated proficiency in an American Indian language can meet all or part of the second language requirement, as certified by the governing body of any federally recognized tribe. American Sign Language meets the second language requirement. The second language requirement applies to students graduating from high school in 1997 and thereafter.
5. A transfer student who does not meet the regular admission requirements may be considered for admission by the Comprehensive Admission Review Committee. Refer to section on comprehensive admission review or contact the Admissions Office.

Transfer student application procedure

1. Complete and return an application for admissions and the required $50 non-refundable application fee or Oregon University System Request for Deferral of Application Fee for Admission. Students can apply online at wou.edu/apply.
2. Have an official, complete transcript sent from each college or university attended. To be considered official, transcripts must be sent directly to the Admissions Office from the issuing institution. Unofficial or student copies are not acceptable. Omitting an institutional record from your application may result in disciplinary action. The director of admissions reserves the right to rescind the admission of any student who falsifies information on their application for admission.
3. Students with less than 36 transferrable hours at the time of application are required to provide an official high school transcript and ACT or SAT Reasoning Exam scores.
4. WOU is committed to serving all students. Applications for admissions will be reviewed throughout the year. The Admissions Office reserves the right to rescind the admission of any student who fails to meet the conditions of their admission to WOU.
5. Students with a complete admission file by the stated deadline will receive priority consideration for university transfer student scholarships. Contact the Office of Admissions or Financial Aid to confirm WOU's scholarship deadline for transfer students.
6. Acceptable records from accredited post-secondary institutions are evaluated by the Admissions Office to determine the student's eligibility for admission to WOU. The amount of credit granted depends on the nature and quality of the applicant's previous work. A student's grade point average will be computed on the transfer credits attempted and will be used as the basis for admission. WOU does not recognize other institutions' academic forgiveness policies.

Transfer student advising

Potential and incoming transfer students can schedule an advising meeting with the Office of Academic Advising and Learning Center to map out the most effective and efficient pathway to a degree.

For Chemeketa Community College students, WOU has formal pathway agreements into the most popular majors for transfer students. These pathways guarantee that students are adequately prepared for majors on the WOU campus.

Dual enrollment agreements

WOU has formal dual enrollment agreements with Chemeketa Community College.

Oregon Transfer Days

During January and February WOU admission counselors visit many Oregon community college to meet with prospective students and answer questions about admissions, financial aid, majors, housing and other topics.

Housing

Transfer students are strongly encouraged to live on campus.

Students living on campus benefit in the following ways:

Early Bird transfer student registration

For admitted transfer students

Early Bird Transfer Student Registration is the first opportunity for admitted transfer students to register for fall term courses. In addition to registering for courses, students will attend academic advising with faculty, learn about valuable campus resources, receive ID cards and tour the residence halls.

Transfer students who are admitted to WOU for Fall Term will receive program information and registration details in April.

Articulation of courses

• Students from Oregon colleges and universities - The vast majority of courses and credits transfer to WOU without concern or difficulty.
• Oregon community college students - Articulation of courses is supported through full acceptance of the Oregon Transfer Module, AAOT, ASOT and individual articulation agreements.

Community college students from other states

In efficient addition to normal course articulation, students from several Western states can transfer to WOU through the use of their state’s transfer degrees. These transfer degrees enable students to transition to WOU having met our Liberal Arts Core Curriculum (LACC).

• California: Intersegmental General Education Transfer Degree (IGETC)
• Hawaii: Articulated Associates of Arts from University of Hawaii
• Washington: Direct Transfer Degree

Scholarships and financial aid

Overall affordability

WOU is one of the most affordable universities in the west. Students at WOU receive a small college experience at the price of a public university.

Financial aid is a normal part of college for most students

All students are strongly encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. Oregon residents should actively apply for these new funds by completing the FAFSA. For more information, go to www.getcollegefunds.org.

Scholarships

WOU offers many scholarships, some specifically for transfer students.

• Oregon Transfer Module Scholarships:for students who have received the Oregon Transfer Module
• AAOT and ASOT Scholarships: for students who have earned the AAOT or the ASOT
• Provost Scholarship: For new transfer students with academic merit

Other scholarships that are open to all incoming students: Diversity Commitment, Leadership and Service and David Brody Scholarship.

Western Tuition Choice

Western Undergraduate Exchange Participating states
WOU is the only public university in the west to guarantee that its tuition for undergraduate students will not increase during the four years it takes to complete a degree. Transfer students receive a pro-rated guarantee period with 15 transfer credits equal to one-third of an academic year. The program is automatic and mandatory or Oregon residents and WUE program participants.

Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

WOU offers WUE awards to transfer students who are residents of one of the 13 western states that participate in the program. WUE students receive a tuition rate of only 50 percent above Oregon residents. This is a savings of nearly $9,000 per year. All majors are open to WUE students.

The Oregon Opportunity Grant

The Oregon Opportunity Grant provides financial support to low and middle-income families. Because the state of Oregon is committed to making college more afford-able to more families this grant is money that will not need to be paid back.

Academic support & development for enrolled transfer students

Academic advising

All students can use the Academic Advising and Learning Center for advising. Students with a declared major have a faculty adviser to support their progress towards a degree and success at WOU.

Career Services

The Office of Service Learning and Career Development offers students assistance in securing internships, career development, preparing résumés and job searches.

Free tutoring

The Academic Advising and Learning Center provides free tutoring—just ask!

Honors Program

Transfer students are eligible to apply for selection into the WOU Honors Program.

Student Enrichment Program (SEP)

The Student Enrichment Program provides services and a supportive environment to equip first generation, low income and students with disabilities with skills to be successful in college. The purpose of this program is to increase the retention and graduation rates of this student population.

Study Abroad

Transfer students can participate in an educational experience through Study Abroad and International Exchanges at over 100 foreign universities.

Writing Center

Obtain assistance in becoming a better writer overall or on a particular paper or project. Writing Center assistance is available online or in person.
