Assignment:

A day in the life of a person
with a chronic illness

CINAHL (from OHSU)
CINAHL with Full Text is a comprehensive source of citations and full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 580 journals indexed in CINAHL. Coverage dates back to 1981.

Medline (from OHSU) ( from WOU)
Contains more than 4 million citations for biomedical literature covering a broad range of medical topics relating to research, clinical practice, administration, policy issues, and health care services. Created and maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. 1997 to present.

Assignment hints for CINAHL and Medline:

General hint:

Try different terminology. The phrases you have may not be the best to search. You may want to search for (and explode!) subject terms in both Medline and CINAHL. This will help gather all of the pertinent information on your topic with less searching. Look for either "MESH" or "CINAHL Headings" in the blue bar at the top of your screen.

More specific hints:

Use the "Limit your results" section of the page. Many of the boxes and options can help you get better results faster.

  • The Clinical Queries box may be particularly useful. Clinical Queries, designed for clinician use, allow users to limit searches with specific search strategies, to aid in retrieving scientifically sound and clinically relevant study reports.
  • You may see the following types of clinical queries (Each of these will also have a level of sensitivity associated. I recommend starting with Best Balance and trying the others only if the results are not satisfactory):
    • Reviews - limits to articles which give an overview of research. Many of these are not "primary resources" (original research), but would be considered scholarly or professional and are a good way to get started.
    • Therapy - retrieves clinical studies that discuss the treatment of diseases.
    • Diagnosis - retrieves clinical studies addressing disease diagnosis
    • Causation (Etiology) - retrieves clinical studies addressing causation/harm in disease and diagnostics
    • Prognosis - retrieves clinical studies addressing disease prognosis
    • Costs/Economics - finds cost or Economics as a heading/sub-heading.
    • Clinical Prediction Guides - The clinical prediction guides filter will retrieve clinical studies addressing risk assessment testing.
    • Qualitative studies - limits to Evaluation studies
    • Levels of Specificity:
      • Best Balance tries to retrieve the best balance between Sensitivity and Specificity
      • High Sensitivity is the broadest search, to include ALL relevant material. It may also include less relevant materials.
      • High Specificity is the most targeted search to include only the most relevant result set, may miss some relevant materials.
  • In Medline, try using the subject subsets for areas like CAM

Still stumped?
