Library Instruction at Western Oregon University

Hamersly Library offers a variety of instructional services. We aim to provide customized instruction that fits the intellectual, social, and technological needs of the learning situation.

To request an instruction contact Robert Monge or the faculty liaison librarian for your area of study

CLASSROOM SESSIONS

Library Room 108 is a SMART classroom with 25 computers and uses either a PC or MAC operating system.

We offer live hands-on instructions
tailored to your specific course/research needs

POINT-OF-NEED INSTRUCTION

If the only thing your assignment calls for is understanding a particular concept or navigating one specific website or database, we can design a custom web page or tutorial to assist your students.

Here is an example of a custom webpage

CUSTOM SEARCH ENGINE

We can create a custom search engine that only searches specific sites on the Internet.

Here is an example of a custom search eninge. It is designed to highlight web resources on The Killer Angels a historical novel about the Battle of Gettysburg.

Hamersly Library has several classrooms which may be reserved for both library and regular classroom instruction sessions. These include:

  • 108 Computer Lab Style
    (State Farm Insurance)
    (25 workstations)
  • 107 Lecture/Demo Style
    (Crawford)
    (45 in classroom style,
    60 in lecture style)
  • 116 Seminar/Demo Style (12)
  • 2nd Floor Computer Alcove
    (9 workstations)

Faculty may view room calendars to check availability of classroom space. To schedule an instruction session, please contact the subject librarian designated as Faculty liaison to your division or department, or contact Robert Monge.

COMMUNITY VISITS

Hamersly Library welcomes visits from high school and community groups when academic library resources are appropriate for student projects. This will more often be the case for students in Grades 11 - 12 than for those in lower grades. Before visiting the library, we recommend consulting with one of the Hamersly Librarians to make sure that the library resources are appropriate and available. Classroom and computer resources may be made available only during times of low student use. For more information, contact Robert Monge

CLASS RESEARCH GUIDES

Class research guides can include everything from websites, blogs, podcasts, library databases, or any useful resource for students. They are tailored to your specific class and can even be tailored to specific assignments.

Here is an Demonstration Class Research Guide. http://research.wou.edu/demo

Students can access class research guides from the library home page under Class Stuff: Class Research Guides or a link can be included into your Moodle pages.

DIGITAL HOW-TO

Want to create an assignment using a wiki, have your students turn in a digital portfolio, or use any of the new digital technologies.

We can do live sessions or create an online tutorial that will show your students how to engage with the Web 2.0 world.
