Full Policy for High-Cost Equipment Software Hardware
Some high-cost equipment (HCE) is available for use by WOU-enrolled students, faculty and staff. Netbook computers provide wireless access to the campus network, electronic resources and printers for educational purposes consistent with participation in University coursework. Netbooks supplement the desktop computers already available in the library. Game consoles provide platforms for various games played through monitors, and for viewing of special media.
Borrowing Policy:
- Only WOU-enrolled students, faculty, and staff with a valid WOU ID card can check out high-cost equipment.
- In the case of a non-photo WOU ID card, an alternate governmental photo ID is required.
- The borrower will complete the High-Cost Equipment (HCE) Borrowing Agreement before equipment can be checked out.
- The borrower will care for high-cost WOU property while it in his/her possession and will return it directly to library personnel at the Checkout Desk.
- The borrower will report any equipment problems immediately to the Checkout Desk staff.
- Netbooks are to be used only in the Hamersly Library. Netbooks may not be taken beyond the library security gates, into the student lounge, or outside the building.
- The borrower will not leave a netbook unattended in the library, except in the case of building evacuation.
- Borrowing privileges may be denied to people who damage the equipment, repeatedly return equipment late, or do not follow these borrowing policies.
- The borrower will pay all late fines, actual repair costs associated with damage to the equipment, and replacement costs (up to $700 plus accrued overdue charges) should the equipment, components or accessories be lost or stolen. Late fines for netbooks are $5.00 per hour, maximum $50 per use; late fines for gaming consoles are $25 per day, maximum $100 per use.
- Western Oregon University and the library assume no responsibility for loss or damage to the borrower’s personal property through use of the HCE.
Checkout Protocol:
- Library personnel at the Checkout Desk confirm the borrower’s eligibility/approval status and identity.
- Netbooks check out for the remainder of the library day and are due 15 minutes before closing.
- For netbooks, the borrower’s WOU ID card is held at the Checkout Desk until the equipment is returned. The library does not “hold” netbooks that are checked out to borrowers.
- Only one netbook may be borrowed at a time.
- Game systems check out for 3-day periods.
- High-cost equipment may be reserved at the Information Desk, 503-838-8418, or Checkout Desk at least one day in advance. Reserved equipment will be held for 30 minutes only. HCE checkout is also available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The standard lab machine software is available on the netbooks. Additional programs are available through Remote Desktop by logging into the terminal servers.
