What is the IRB?

The purpose of IRB oversight of research is to assure the protection of the research participants, the researcher, and the university. The research community has a responsibility to ensure that the treatment of human participants in research meets the highest ethical standard.

Why complete an IRB application and review?

IRB application

If the proposed research activity involves human participants and may contribute (e.g., through publication, presentation, or dissemination outside the WOU community) to "generalizable knowledge", then the activity will require review and approval by the WOU Institutional Review Board before any recruitment or research involving human participants may begin.

IRB review and approval is required for ALL research projects involving human participants, regardless of the source of funding for the project or the level of risk posed to participants.

Are you ready for the IRB application?

New research projects need to complete the IRB Application.

Exempt applications may take 2 - 4 weeks to review.

Expedited applications may take 4 - 6 weeks to review.

Full Board applications may take 4 - 8 weeks to review.

Review times are estimates based upon the following factors:

  1. the quality and completeness of the submission;
  2. the number of studies in the queue at the time of submission (studies are processed in the order in which they are received);
  3. the length of time it takes applicants to respond to pending items and questions from the IRB committee; and,
  4. the availability of the IRB members (all IRB committee members are volunteers).

NOTE: IRB applications are generally not reviewed when WOU is not in session.

All applications should be submitted through email as one document with signatures. Submit to: IRB@wou.edu.
