International students are an important part of the WOU community bringing a diversity of nationalities, cultures, and languages. ISAS was created to support the academic success of these students and the faculty who instruct them. In addition to advising curricular decisions regarding coursework for international students, ISAS engages in the following activities.

A collection of moments in which international students have made an impact on individuals at WOU

Lilly is now completing her second audited class with me this year. Today, our last class day, she gave me a small gift designed to improve eyesight. Surprised, I replied that, actually, the vision in my left eye had been starting to deteriorate slightly (I don't currently wear glasses or contacts), and that this didn't concern me but was a new thing this year. She replied simply and quietly, "I know."
She didn't participate at all in class, verbally, but she was always present and quite content to just be there and listen. As the term went on, I think she brought some of her friends along, too, as my Chinese contingent grew by 1-2 people in some classes. Anyway, I speak far too fast and talk about too many subjective, literary, high-theory things to ever be much use to these Chinese students, I suspect, but I was touched today by her sweet, attentive gift and also her (and another Chinese student's) request to take pictures with me after class. It was a great day, reconfirming some of the special moments of being a teacher that too often get lost during pre-finals crunch."
