December

December 7 - 19, a delegation of 12 faculty from the divisions of Creative Arts, Business and Computer Sciences visited and gave presentations at 14 institutions in China.

October

October 22, a delegation led by the Chairman Wang with four administrators from Xuchang University visited WOU. The delegation met with Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Steve Scheck and other WOU administrators.

September

September 22-23, ISSA conducted it's fall 2013 New International Students' Orientation at Bnai Brith Camp in Lincoln City.

September 11, Mr. Koich Ando, Director of International Programs at Otamae University of Japan visited WOU and met with Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Steve Scheck. Mr. Ando 's visit was to finalize the proposed 3+1 joint program between OU and WOU.

July

July 15, a delegation from Guangxi Arts Institute led by Professor Liu Yinan, Dean of Art Education visited WOU. The delegation met with WOU's administrators and faculty in Creative Arts Division for the the incoming 2+2 and 3+1 cooperations between GAI and WOU.

2013

May

May 27, ISSA and the International Club organized the Annual International Night at the Pacific Room.  There were more than 300 guests in attendance that enjoyed a night of international cuisine and performances presented by WOU international students. 

March

March, Computer Science Professor Jie Liu gave lectures at Zhengzhou University of Light Industry and Shenda College in Zhengzhou, China. Professor Liu's visit was arranged by ISSA.

2010

January 5, an official delegation from Guangxi China visited WOU. The delegation was lead by Professor Ye Deming, Vice President of Guangxi Teacher's University, along with Professor Xiao Qiang, Dean of College of International Studies and Professor Qin Song of Guangxi Medical University.

December

December 14 through 30, Business faculty Judy Beebe gave a two-week lecture at Zhongyuan University of Technology in Zhengzhou, China. Professor Beebe's visit was arranged by ISSA.

December 10, Sandy Soohoo-Refaei, Deputy Director of International Programs and five staff from Linfield College visited ISSA and met with a number of faculty and staff at WOU.

November

November 30-December 1, invited by the Internationl Office at Southern Oregon University, ISSA staff Ambre Plahna and Ermie Buncal visited SOU.

November 16-20, ISSA co-hosted the 2009 International Education Week with Study Abroad and International Education Committee.  ISSA organized a Clubs/Organizations Fair, the World Expo, and the International Potluck at Gentle House.  The International Club, Chinese Students Club, and the Saudi Student Union all participated in these events.

October 26-27, arranged by ISSA, an official delegation from Shenyang University visited WOU.

September 20-21, ISSA organized the annual Overnight Orientation for fall term new international students at Canyon View Camp,

July 31, ISSA hosted a BBQ/Outdoor event at Main Street Park, which was open to all international students and friends.  Approximately 40 attended the event.

June 14-July 1, ISSA sponsored 18 WOU Students and 5 staff advisors of International Ambassador and Mentor Program visited Shanghai, Nanning, Guilin, and Beijing in China.

May

May 23, ISSA and the International Club organized the Annual International Night at the Pacific Room.  There were around 275 guests in attendance that enjoyed a night of international cuisine and performances presented by WOU international students. 

May 15, ISSA assisted in organizing student volunteers for City of Monmouth anniversary events, The Victorian Tea Party, and planting trees in Monmouth parks. 

March

March 31st – April 1st, Dr. Stacy Klippenstein, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs; Dr. Kirk Lacy, Executive Director of International Outreach; Ms. Jeannie McIsaac-Tracy, Director of Student Life & Housing; Ms. Cheri. Johannes, Director of Admissions and Records; and Ms. Karla Rae Wickens, Program Specialist, Office of International Studies at Montana State University Billings will be visiting WOU and ISSA.

March 23-27, New Student Orientation week for Spring Term.  ISSA and International Students Incorporated hosted a dinner/activity event off campus for new spring term students on March 24.

March 10, ISSA and IEP organized a class trip to visit parks around Polk County as part of their American Culture Class.

February 27, Mr. Alex Pia, Director; Ms. Dianna McIntyre, Assistant Director and Ms. Su-Jian Jung of George Fox University International Office visited ISSA. Photos

February 10, ISSA and Student Leadership and Activities co-sponsored an excursion to Lincoln City and Tillamook open to all WOU students.  The all-day trip included a trip to the beach, Tanger Outlet Mall, and Tillamook Cheese Factory.

February 1st, Chinese Student and Scholar Club hosted the tranditional Chinese New Year celebration.

January 2009

January 23-24, ISSA and International Club organized the annual over-night ski trip to Mt. Hood. More than 110 international students participated in this event.

January 22, ISSA hosted a reception for its new International Student Advisor and new visiting scholars.

WOU welcomes 26 new international students from China, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan for winter 2009.

December 29, IEP program gave the placement test to new winter term IEP international students.

December 2-17, President John Minahan, Neng Yang, and two representatives from Montana State University Billings visited a number of Chinese institutions and government agencies in China.

November

November 17-21, ISSA, Office of Study Abroad and Exchanges, and Faculty International Education Committee hosted the 2008 International Week event.

November 17-18, ISSA director Neng Yang visited Montana State University Billings.

November 9-14, Three ISSA staff attended the NAFSA Region I & II Conference.

September 22-October 14, ISSA director Neng Yang visited 13 institutions in China.

WOU welcomes 86 new international students from Bulgaria, Bukina Faso, Chile, China, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam for fall 2008.

September 28, President Minahan hosted an international student BBQ party at the University House to welcome new international students and returning international students.

September 22-23, International Office hosted its fall 2009 International Student over-night retreat event at Canyon View Camp, Silverton, Oregon.

September 17-18, Intensive English Program conducted its fall 2009 placement test for new IEP students.

September 18, Chinese investor Mogan Zhang visited WOU.

September 17, Karen Boucias, director of International Programs at the University of Maine visited WOU.

August 22, the International Office hosted a BBQ party for summer IEP international students.

July 28-30, ISSA director Neng Yang visited Montana State University Billings and gave a presentation to the university administrators and faculty representatives.

July 25, ISSA organized a trip for summer Intensive English Program students to visit the Oregon Pacific Coast.

July 8-9, Dean Steve Scheck and ISSA director Neng Yang visited Embassies of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Republic of Iraq, Republic of Libya, Sultanate of Oman, and United Arab Emirates in Washington D.C., met with the academic advisors Eltayeb El Salawi, Tarig Eltayeb and David Lemons of Saudi Cultural Mission; Iraqi Cultural Attaché and Deputy Attaché Dr. Hadi  Alkhalili and Dr. JalalShareef; Libyan Cultural Mission academic advisor Abdulhamid Megeirhi; Oman Cultural Attaché Dr. AsyaAl-Lamky and academic advisor Hassan Abdelnabi; UAE Cultural Attaché Dr. Asma Al Ketbi,  Academic Advisors Mohammed Mahmoud and  Dr. Larbi Lezzam,  Assistant Military Attaché Eid Al-Darmaki.

WOU welcomes 19 new international students from China, Japan, and Taiwan for summer 2008.

June 18th-July 9th, Professor Diane Tarter, Chair of Division of Creative Arts, and Professor Kim Hoffman, Chair of Art Department, visited China Academy of Art, Shanghai Normal University, and Dalian polytech University College of Design in China and Saitama University in Japan.

June 16–20, ISSA hosted a New Student Orientation for summer international students.

WOU welcomes 9 visiting scholars from Shenyang University, Shenyang Institute of Engineering, Dalian Polytech University.

May

May 30, ISSA administered an Institutional TOEFL test for current intensive English Program international students at WOU campus.

May 29, ISSA organized a trip for Intensive English Program students to a fantasy play at the Pentacle Theater.

May 24–31, four ISSA staff traveled to NAFSA Conference and Expo in Washington D.C. for a week of workshops, sessions and updates regarding international student topics from admissions, advising, and H-1B visas.

May 23, ISSA hosted an International Student BBQ event at Gentle Woods Park, for club recruitment and graduating international students.

May 22, ISSA administered an official IELTS test for current intensive English Program international students at WOU campus.

May 17, Annual International Night Event.  A night of international cuisine and performances brought to you by WOU international students.  Sponsors:  International Club, Chinese Student Association, ISSA.

April

April 27–May 1, ISSA staff Ermie Buncal traveled to seven community colleges throughout the Seattle area during their Spring International Transfer Fairs to recruit international students. 

April 26, ISSA cosponsored (with Student Leadership & Activities Office) a trip to the Oregon Zoo for 72 students. 

April 17, ISSA organized a trip for Intensive English Program students to the Pentacle Theater to watch a play.

April 11, ISSA hosted a tax information & preparation for International students at Hamersly Library computer lab.

April 9th, The International Student and Scholars Affairs office sponsored a campus visit from the Oregon Society of CPAs at 3:30 in the Columbia Room. Judy Link, an Oregon Society of CPAs member, will be discussing the advantages of becoming a CPA and the benefits of becoming an Oregon Society of CPAs member. This presentation was provided for all students interested in becoming an accountant.

April 5th-30th, WOU President John Minahan and ISSA director Neng Yang visited a number of Chinese institutions and the U.S. Consulates in Shenyang and Chengdu.

Two new instructors Patricia Schilasky and James Jamieson have joined the Intensive English Program beginning Spring term 2008, both of them recently graduated from a Master of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language program.

WOU welcomes 31 new international students from China, India, Japan, Saudi Arabia and United Arabic Emirates. The new students arrived at the beginning of Spring term 2008, and enrolled in both degree and ESL programs.

March 15th, International Student Club hosted an Appreciation Dinner for local community members. It is an event organized by international students to thank our local community for their support and care to our international students, as well to share the international cousin with American friends.

March 13th-14th, Invited by the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco, ISS director Neng Yang visited the Chinese Consulate General and met with the Honorable Consul General Zhanshng Gao and the Chief Education Consul Yang Shen. The topic of the meeting was to further develop the cultural and educational exchanges between WOU and Chinese institutions.

March 4th-8th, ISS staff Ambre Plahn attended the NAFSA Academy training in Atlanta, Georgia. The Academy was designed to provide trainings to the professionals in the field of international education.

March 4th , International Office hosted a "Open House" event for WOU faculty, staff, and international students.

February 11th - 19th, International Office hosted a delegation of 8 students (youth journalists) and 4 teachers from Qianshan Evening News, China. Photos

February 9th, the Chinese Student Association organized the 2008 Chinese New Year's celebration party in the Werner Student Center. Education Consul Yao Faming of Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco attended the event. Photos

February 8th, International Office hosted a finance training delegation of 23 bankers from Shanxi China. The group visited MAPS Credit Union, the US Bank Regional Headquarter in Salem, as well as the State Capital. The group also visited WOU campus and met with President John Minahan. Photos

January 18th - February 8th, ISS director Neng Yang visited 16 institutions and agencies in Vietnam and 5 institutions in China. Photos

January 2008

January 14th, International office hosted a reception to welcome the new International Student Advisor Katrina Nielsen to join its team, and to welcome Dr. Sang Yoo, a visiting professor from Hoseo University of Korea.

WOU welcomes 36 new students from China, Indonesia, Japan, Saudi Arabia and United Arabic Emirates. The new students arrived at the beginning of winter quarter 2008, and enrolled in both degree and ESL programs.

December

December 9th-22nd, sponsored by the International Office and organized by the Music Department , WOU's Student Chamber Choir visited China during the Winter Break. The Student Chamber Choir of 31 student singers led by Dean Stephen Scheck and Dr. Solveig Holmquist performed at Anshan Normal University, Shenyang University, Dalian Polytech University and China Central Academy of Fine Arts. November 16th - December 8th, ISS director Neng Yang visited 6 institutions and agencies in Korea and 5 institutions in China.

December 4th, International Office hosted a "Open House" event for all WOU faculty, staff, and international students.

November 15th, A delegation led by the Deputy Secretary of Education of Fujian Province Mr. Zheng Zuxian, President Huang Hongwu of Xiamen University of Technology, President Jiang Xinhua of Fujian University of Technology, and Vice President Fang Zhenzheng of Fuzhou University visited WOU and met with President John Minahan.

November 12-16th, International Education Week, a Week-long set of events to celebrate and promote international education and exchange.  Events sponsored are World Expo, Sushi Demonstration, Ping Pong Tournament, International Potluck.

November 9th, International Office organized a trip for Intensive English Program students to Champoeg National Park for a living history event.

November 2nd, International Office hosted its first "International Coffee Hour" for WOU students, faculty and staff. The event is designed to provide an opportunity for international students and scholars to meet and talk to WOU students, faculty and staff. The event will be taking place on the first Tuesday of every month from 12:00-1:00pm during the academic term.

October 25th, President Hua Li and two staff from China East Liaoning University visited WOU. President Hua Li met with President John Minahan and Dean Stephen Scheck of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Photos

October 23rd, Judy Link, a representative from Oregon Society of CPAs conducted a workshop to international students about becoming a CPA.

October 22nd, President Jiayou Yu, Dalian Polytech University of China, visited WOU. President Yu met with Vice President Mark Weiss, Dean Stephen Scheck of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Professor Diane Tarter, Chair of Creative Arts Division, and Professor Kim Hoffman, Chair of Art Department. The name of English as a Second Language Program (ESL) at WOU has been changed to Intensive English Program (IEP) effective August 29th, 2007.

August 21st, Mr. Neng Yang and Mr. Peter Courtney, President of Oregon State Senate, met with the Honorable Zhou Wenzhong, the Chinese Ambassador to the U. S., and the Honorable Peng Keyu, The Chinese Consul General of San Francisco in Portland, Oregon. Photos

WOU welcomes 29 new students from China, Saudi Arabia. The new students arrived at the beginning of summer term 2007.

June 6th through 7th, Professor Di Zhu, Dean of Academic Affairs at China Central Academy of Fine Arts visited WOU and met with Dean Stephen Scheck of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Professor Diane Tarter, Chair of Creative Arts Division, and Professor Kim Hoffman, Chair of Art Department to discuss the cooperation between the two institutions.

December 20th, International Office hosted a Christmas pizza party for international students who were on campus during the winter break.

Saturday November 18th, the International Office organized a day trip for 40 international students to the Tillamook Cheese Factory and the Tillamook Air Museum. Photos

Monday November 13th to Friday November 17th, the International Students Office, Study Abroad Office and International Education Committee sponsored the International Week event on Campus. Photos

Saturday, November 11th at 1:00pm in the Pacific Room located in Werner University Center.  the Portland Chinese Dance Troup performed a Chinese folk dance, a Dai Zu dance and a Tibet dance; each dance represents a different minority group within China.  Additionally, WOU student Shuai Liu performed the piano between each dance, she is ranked amongst the highest pianist at the amateur level in China. Saturday October 21st, the International Office organized a field trip for new International Students to Silver Falls, Oregon. Photos

International Student Advisor Erin Van Ausdal attended the Region I NAFSA Conference from October 17th through October 21st in Boise, Idaho.

September

To welcome 72 new international students arriving at WOU's campus, President John Minahan hosted a BBQ reception at the President's House at 4:00pm on Sunday, September 24th, 2006. Photos

To welcome new international students/scholars and returning international students/scholars, the Office of International Students and Scholars Affairs hosted an over-night retreat event from September 19th through 20th, 2006 at the BB Camp near Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast. Fall of 2006 new international students and scholars' orientation took place at the new office location in Maaske Hall (next to Werner University Center and cross the street to the Library) on Tuesday, September 18th, 2006.

August

The Office of International Students and Scholars Affairs moved into the new office in Maaske Hall on August 28th, 2006.

WOU's President, Dr. John Minahan, Vice President Mark Weiss, and Mr. Neng Chiang Yang, visited China from August 4th through 19th. The delegation visited a number of institutions as well as the U.S. Embassy and Consulate Generals in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Guangxi, Shanghai and Beijing.

July

A delegation from Guilin Institute of Tourism in China visited Western Oregon University at the invitation of WOU President, Dr. John Minahan.

June

A delegation of 17 visiting scholars from Laibin City, Guangxi Province of China arrived at WOU on June 19th, 2006. The delegation took workshops in business management, visited local businesses and state government, and discussed the possibility of establishing a sister relation with the City of Salem. Photos

Willamette University's Management School conducted a Recruitment Fair in the Werner Center followed by a presentation by Willamette representatives for international students interested in hearing about their program.

Neng Chiang Yang, director of International Students and Scholars Affairs, accompanied John Minahan, President of Western Oregon University, and Jem Spectar, Provost of Western Oregon University to visit a number of universities and government agencies in China, to recruit students and to establish official relations with these organizations. President Minahan also visited Kainan University in Taiwan, and the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in China.

Western Oregon University welcomes 17 new international students for the spring quarter of 2006, among them, two Japanese students, two Saudi students, 12 Chinese students and one Chilean student. The new students are enrolled in both degree and ESL programs. New students' photos

Western Oregon University welcomes five Chinese visiting scholars from Anshan Normal University, Shenyang Institute of Engineering, Shenyang Polytech University, Shenyang University for three months to one-year research projects. The visiting scholars will be conducting the workshops on the topics of Chinese history, culture and the recent economic development in China to Western students and faculty.

Neng Chiang Yang, director of International Students and Scholars Affairs at Western Oregon University, visited a number of institutions and agencies in China to recruit students and to establish cooperative relations with some of these institutions.

February

The Office of International Students and Scholars Affairs held a special reception for Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Ayam on campus. He met with International Students on Friday, February 17th, 5:00 p.m., at the Conference Room in APS 501.

The Office of International Students and Scholars Affairs invited Bradley Meyer of Portland to give an immigration workshop to WOU international students. Mayer, a well-known immigration attorney, talked about the issues and procedures related to the Optional Practical training, H-1B working visa, and Permanent Residency Petition to our international students and international faculty.

January 2006

October- November 2005
