Pre-Conference Workshops

We encourage you to consider attending a pre-conference workshop on Friday, March 7. These workshops are usually more in-depth and interactive than the main conference sessions. The fee for each workshop is $25 and you can sign up for pre-conference workshops when you register for the conference.

Please keep in mind that participants who are requesting free lodging on Friday night are required to register for a Friday night workshop.

Workshop Descriptions

First Aid / CPR
5:00 - 9:30pm
This American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid course teaches how to manage illness and injuries for adults and children in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. This class teaches CPR, AED use, relief of choking and use of barrier devices for all ages. NOTE: This workshop begins at 5:00pm, and participants must be on time to receive certification. This course will not count toward Oregon CE hours.

New Oregon Risk Prevention Curriculum Conversation and FAQs
6:00 - 9:00pm
This interactive workshop is geared toward individuals who already have some experience with the new curriculum interface and Playbook. The purpose is to discuss and answer any questions, comments, suggestions, or problems that people have encountered since they began using the curriculum. There will also be opportunities to demonstrate activities and other resources, as needed. Please come prepared with questions and discussion ideas for the group. This workshop will only be successful if the attendees contribute to the conversation.

Easily Implemented Teaching Activities
6:00 - 9:00pm
Participants will engage in several activities that involve students in the learning process. Discussions of the activities with participant modifications will follow each activity. The activities can easily be implemented into courses.

Teaching Through Tickets: Driver Education in Traffic Court
6:00 - 9:00pm
Driver education instructors and judges often have the same role - teaching drivers to drive more safely by learning traffic laws and the reasons behind them. The only real difference is that police and judges see people after they've gotten in trouble; driver ed instructors see them before. Judge Todd explains traffic laws to defendants while they are in court. Officers are starting to do this as well - at the time of the traffic stop, in the hallway outside the courtroom, even at traffic schools the officers teach themselves. This presentation will include lots of real-life examples and videos to demonstrate the common infractions that Judge Todd encounters in traffic court.
