Online Courses - Faculty Information

Colleges and universities throughout the world have seen a shift in student demographics over the past several years. Today’s students are more likely to:

  • be older than the “typical” 18-22 years,
  • be first-generation college students,
  • work while attending school,
  • and have children.

In addition, students are more likely to transfer coursework between institutions if another school better meets their needs.

All of these factors have contributed to the trend that new research shows: nearly one in five higher education students take at least one class online. Online enrollment rose by nearly 10% to 3.49 million in Fall 2006, compared to 3.18 million in Fall 2005.

So why does WOU offer online courses? Because online courses fit our students’ needs.

Our goal in offering online courses is to develop a course that is comparable or superior to its face-to-face counterpart in course objectives, learning outcomes, academic rigor, and student-peer-instructor interaction.
