Extended Programs Staff

Welcome to the Division of Extended Programs

We hope we get a chance to visit with you by phone or email this year! Our office has been growing, changing, and evolving and we have some wonderful addtions to our office. Sandy Smith is the new Business Office Manager. Teri Braun will greet you and help to answer your questions. Elayne Kuletz is the new WOU Instructional Design Coordinator; she has been busy working with faculty on campus integrating technology into their teaching methods. Brian Sly-Haley is the new Career and Professional Program Manager. He has been developing some new programs and connections with surrounding business and communities.

Our office is located on the very North end of campus in the Terry House, which is actually an old house converted into office spaces. We hope to see you soon!

JoNan has been part of the Division of Extended Programs since 2000 developing non-credit programs and summer camps, as well as credit program outreach to non-traditional students. Director of DEP since spring 2007, her focus has been to provide stellar support to distance students, collaborate with colleges to increase visibility and reputation of WOU programs and serve as liaison for continuing education and outreach for WOU. Prior to that, she taught for 19 years in various independent education settings from preschool through high school. A few highlights: math teacher in a grade 8-12 boarding school; tutor in the Learning Skill Program for student with learning challenges; Academic Dean; public school substitute teacher K-12; headmaster of a grade 1-6 independent school in Monmouth developing curriculum, teaching, fundraising and working with a wonderful community of learners.

Teri provides support for the Traffic Safety, Non-Credit, Continuing Education and Professional Development programs in DEP. She is a 2011 graduate from Corban University with a degree in communications. Teri enjoys being active, reading and improving her disc golf game.

Susan started with DEP in 2003 working with online graduate education programs. In 2005 she transitioned into the College of Education and spent the next five years recruiting, advising and supporting faculty and students in various ED programs. She returned to DEP in 2010 to manage online graduate programs and work with school districts and agencies for credit overlay options. Prior to starting at Western, she earned a BS in business/economics, a master's in adult education from Penn State Univ., and part of a Ph. D. in college administration. She spent nine years advising students and coordinating programs in Eastern Oregon for BMCC and EOU. Susan loves working with inspiring professionals on both WOU campus and in school districts across Oregon; she finds their commitment to lifelong learning is contagious!

Angela has been with DEP since 2002. She manages the Criminal Justice online programs, Traffic Safety Education, LAS online courses, remedial Math, Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate of Completion and summer special courses and workshops. She is also the advisor for distance students in the BA/BS Criminal Justice and MA Criminal Justice programs. Angela holds an MBA from Oregon State University and an undergraduate degree in Marketing.

Jenn started working for DEP in 2004 supporting non-credit workshops and camps. Currently, she supports multiple program managers for various on-campus to online courses. She also helps update the DEP web pages.

Elayne Kuletz

Elayne is the Instructional Design Coordinator for DEP. She was a graduate student and an adjunct faculty member in the College of Education before being hired to her current post. She has an MSED in information technology from WOU and a BA in foreign languages from the University of Idaho. Elayne has a patient husband, an old car and a disobliging habit of setting off several fire alarms when she cooks.

Brian Sly-Haley

Brian spends his days working with area professionals to develop professional development and workforce training programs. Prior to joining the staff at Western, he received an MBA from Willamette University and spent six years developing strategic partnerships in the nonprofit industry. Brian is a self-proclaimed foodie who enjoys teaching people new ways to cook traditional meals and is very excited to be working with a great team to develop the new Health Care Interpreting program.

Sandy Smith

Sandy joined DEP in 2011 as the chief number cruncher fine-tuning budgets, payroll and the like. Her prior experience included stints with a variety of organizations large and small, profit and non-profit, in several different industries. Before settling in Oregon she lived, worked and traveled internationally for 11 years, including six years working in an international school. She still has the travel bug. Sandy is a licensed CPA and received her MBA from Seattle University.
