How will a Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice help me?

Degree requirements in the Criminal Justice industry vary by position, rank, location, and many other factors. Many positions require applicants to hold a BA/BS degree to be considered. Other positions that do not require a degree often have a financial incentive for degree-holders and/or an opportunity to advance more quickly. Listed below, you will find a list of examples.

  • Oregon State Troopers (and Fish & Wildlife Officers) who hold a bachelor’s degree earn 6% more than their counterparts who do not hold a degree.

  • The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) requires all special agents to hold a bachelor’s degree.

  • The Oregon Department of Corrections list a bachelor’s degree as a requirement for the following positions:
    • Adult Parole & Probation Officer
    • Correctional Counselor
    • Correctional Hearings Officer
    • Principle Executive/Manager
  • Individuals with a bachelor’s degree can earn an Intermediate Certification from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) two years faster than their counterparts with an Associate’s degree and six years faster than individuals with only 15 college credits.

  • Individuals with a bachelor’s degree can earn an Advanced Certification from DPSST three years faster than their counterparts with an associate’s degree and six years faster than individuals with only 30 college credits.

  • When applying for a federal job, applicants with a bachelor’s degree are eligible for the GS-5 grade level. Those who kept a minimum B average are eligible for the GS-7 grade level.
