Exploratory Advising
Western Oregon University welcomes students who have not decided on a major or minor.  In fact we encourage exploration of all that our university has to offer.  There are numerous campus resources to assist and educate you as you move forward in your educational, career and life journey.

Start your journey by debunking some common college major myths, taking a personality assessment, or making an appointment with an academic advisor or career counselor.  These and many other tools and resources are here to help you.  You will find that the time and energy you invest in this process now will pay off in the short and long term by ensuring you are in the right major that is right for you.
Exploratory Information:

  • Did you know that the VAST majority of freshmen are undecided even though most do not know it?  It’s true!  Most freshmen who declare their major before entering college change that choice several times before settling on one and graduating.
  • It is extremely important to explore the tremendous options available at the university. Entering freshman are often entirely unaware of the variety and scope of possibilities.
  • Being undecided is often due to not having enough information to make a good decision, or not enough time to think the issue through.
  • The truth is this: It is okay, in fact normal, to be undecided. However, it is not suggested you stay undecided. Being undecided becomes stressful, inefficient with your time and money, and ultimately counterproductive.
  • Create your own path!  Taking responsibility for your education and choosing a major takes times, involves planning, researching, investigating, weighing out your options and making a well-informed decision.
  • There are steps you can take to gather the necessary information to make a sound decision that has real meaning for your life.
  • To begin, you need to understand the process of making informed decisions and discovering who you are.  In order to make your best decision you will need to invest in yourself, put in the time and effort required to determine your interests, values, skills, and goals. In the end, the decision you make is your own; we here in the AALC can assist you along your pathway to choosing a major by providing you with the tools and resources to ensure you succeed.
