Ackerman Hall, the new residence hall, coined a live-learn facility, features both a living component and academic space for classes and meetings. The residence hall will have 303 beds in rooms with both single and double occupancy and office space for University Residences and Campus Dining. The live-learn residence hall will be centrally located on campus between the Valsetz Dining Hall, Werner University Center and academic buildings. There will be nine live-learn communities in the building, which will house first year students as well as sophomores, juniors and seniors.
This facility was designed with major sustainable and "green" elements to conserve resources and save on energy. The building is working toward achieving LEED platinum certification, and once achieved, will be the only residence hall west of the Mississippi with such a rating. Increased insulation, solar hot water, solar heat collectors and solar thermal panels will help to reduce energy costs. Low-flow plumbing fixtures and rainwater harvesting will reduce water consumption. Each resident's room will have low- and high-use electrical outlets so that when no one is in the room, the lights and items plugged into the low-use outlets will turn off. This is for items not used as frequently such as iPod chargers or printers. Even the handful of trees that were removed from the Grove for this building will be milled and used within the facility in a variety of ways including wall panels or slats and furniture.
