Weeklong series of events honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.for release: Sept. 23 , 2009
MONMOUTH – Western Oregon University is hosting its 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration from January 19 to 22. There are multiple events planned throughout the week to honor Dr. King's legacy, and mission. The commemorative dinner and dance require tickets, all other events are free.
Tuesday, Jan. 19:
Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week Kick Off
12 to 1 p.m., Werner University Center (WUC), Oregon Room
Come join as we kick off the events of the week! The Vice President for Student Affairs start off the celebration with a welcome and then Mike Finlay the Community Partner Liasion will introduce our shoe drive; that will be happening all week. Plus free cake.
Wednesday, Jan. 20:
Student panel discussion
12 to 1 p.m., WUC Oregon Room
Featuring WOU students from the Multicultural Student Union, the Black Student Union, the Student Enrichment Program as well as other groups on campus this student panel will discuss the state of social justice, equality and how they as students "Live the Dream" of Dr. King.
4 to 5 p.m., the WUC Den
Bringing together the multiple faiths that are on the WOU campus, Ann Bowersox the campus minister will lead this community building event.
Thursday, Jan. 21:
6 to 8 p.m., WUC Pacific Room
Featuring Bridget Gray a spoken word poet and performer! Tickets are $9 for general admission $5 for students or for shoe donations and $10 at the door. Tickets will be available in the WUC MLK table beginning Thursday January 14th in the WUC.
Friday, Jan. 22:
Dance 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., WUC Pacific Room
To bring the events of the week to a close there will be a dance, with a live DJ! Tickets are $1 for WOU Students and $2 for general admission tickets will be available at the door.
Throughout the week the MLK Celebration will be collecting shoes for donation to local charities. Many children grow so quickly and the cost of new shoes can really add up. Please take part in this service project and donate a pair of new or gently used shoes. There will be donation locations in the WUC.
Video essay/written essay contest
This is a student essay competition with a $250 scholarship. Students can submit either a 750 to 1000 word, double spaced, single sided written essay; or a three to five minute video. If you have questions about the contest, call 503-838-8834 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
