Dr. Gonzalez-Via´┐Ża awarded Peruvian Congressional Medal of Honor

for release:  Dec. 7 , 2009

MONMOUTH – Dr. Eduardo Gonzalez-Viaña, professor of Spanish and an author, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor of Peru in the grade of Gran Cruz, the highest honor the legislature can bestow, at a ceremony held during the legislative session on Thursday, Nov. 26. Gonzalez-Viaña was a keynote speaker for a conference about immigrants rights prior to receiving the award. María de Pilar Tello, president of the Peruvian Official Newspaper introduced Gonzalez-Viaña, and it was presented by Luis Alva Castro, president of the Peruvian Congress. The same award will be granted this week to Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva, known popularly as Lula, the current President of Brazil.

Gonzalez Viaña has authored more than 30 published works and has been the recipient of many prestigious literary awards. Among these, the International Latino Prize of the United States, the National Prize of Literature of Peru, and the International Prize of Narrative Juan Rulfo. Gonzalez-Viaña literary works have manifested the hardships and miracles of Latin American immigrants in the United States.

Recently Eduardo Gonzalez Viaña presented the biography of Cesar Vallejo a Peruvian author who is considered, with Pablo Neruda, as one of the two most important poets of the 20th century in the Spanish language. Gonzalez Viaña was able to reconstruct Vallejo’s tragic incarceration and wondrous life experiences all with judicial records and a series of unpublished letters.

Gonzalez Viaña’s novel “Dante’s Ballad” is considered a classic literary piece that depicts immigration in the United States. In less than two years the novel has been published worldwide and in several languages (English, Spanish, and Italian). In 2007, Gonzalez Viaña won the International Latino Prize of Novel for “Dante’s Ballad” an event widely covered by media. The well known writers Gioconda Belli and Isabel Allende shared the second prize.

The author publishes every week “El Correo de Salem,” a column that appears in dozens of publications and the network of Spanish newspapers “La Nueva España.”  The column serves as a voice for immigrant rights, but also tries to depict life in North America.
