The Staff Senate complements the Faculty Senate and the Student Senate as a component of Western Oregon University's system of shared governance. It is comprised of elected members from the two staff categories at the University. Guests are encouraged to attend meetings.

Staff Senate seeks to promote dialogue and works to complement all faculty, staff, and student senates and councils in an effort to influence positive and progressive change to the Western Oregon University community.

Statement of Ethical Values
As an academic community, we value for each of our members the right to pursue learning, to seek truth, and to speak freely. We value honesty and candor in all situations and confidentiality in matters of private concern. We value a community that upholds human dignity, honors diversity, and promotes excellence and individual growth. We encourage respect for the rights of our fellow humans, for all life, and for the world we are given.
In light of these values, we pledge to conduct ourselves with integrity, to show compassion and understanding toward all, to ensure responsible exercise of authority, and to seek peaceful resolution of our differences.
We acknowledge our debt to all who have worked to establish the rights and responsibilities of academic life and we pledge to preserve this heritage for those yet to come.

The 2009-2010 Staff Senate donated a bench and picnic table in memory of Larry Bentley and Richard "Dick" Webber, both valued members of the WOU campus community who passed away in the last year. . Below is a biography for each of these individuals. On October 21, 2010, these memorials were dedicated in a ceremony open to the public. 2009-2010 Staff Senate President Joe Hutchinson served as the emcee for the ceremony. Members of Larry Bentley's family were in attendance, and several people shared their memories of both Larry and Dick.

Larry Bentley
“No problem. We can do that.” Larry Dean Bentley was born in Waterloo, Iowa, as the first of four children, to Loren and Velma (Mackie) Bentley. In 1948 the family moved to California, where they eventually settled in Torrance. Larry moved to Phoenix, Ariz. a couple of years after graduating from high school, where he started his career in broadcasting at KPHO. He married Sherry Quiring on April 25, 1964 and they had four children. Coming to Western in 2005, Larry was a TV broadcast engineer with University Computing Services in the video production area. Over his lifetime Larry was awarded an Emmy for his electronic camera work on “The Andersonville Trial.” Prior to coming to Western, his jobs included working at Oregon Public Broadcasting, where he was the technical manager for several major productions. | |

Richard “Dick” Webber
“Well now ya done it.” Dick was born in Eugene, the son of Richard and Rose (Fotta) Webber. The family moved to Independence and Dick graduated from Central high School in 1970. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and after 25 years of service, retired in April 2000. Dick married Maria Sampuand on July 20, 1987 and they had five daughters. Dick joined Western Oregon University in June 2006 and worked in the Physical Plant as WOU’s licensed journeyman plumber, certified pool operator, and lead worker along with a host of other duties on our campus. Prior to joining WOU, he worked at Oregon State University for six years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, working on old cars, watching NASCAR, and was a member of the West Salem Christian Church. |
