When tracing the history of our esteemed university, a common thread is recognized throughout Oregon and the nation – quality education. Our proud heritage has grown from a reputation as a "normal school" producing Oregon's finest teachers to include a robust College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. From educating tomorrow's science teachers to future doctor's from our chemistry and biology programs, we are committed to improving the quality of life for our communities.
Western Oregon University continues to hold true to our mission of educating Oregonians. In fact, 85 percent of our students are from Oregon with every county represented on campus. Furthermore, like myself, over 50 percent are first-generation college students. Due to the current economic climate of our state and nation, we must invest in education to create a stronger workforce capable of meeting the needs of a rapidly evolving society.
In the following pages, you will learn more about the challenges and opportunities ahead for our science program. Looking to the future, we are excited to assist our dedicated faculty and staff, improve the scholarly work of our students, and impact the quality of life for all citizens. As you read, I encourage you to think about your place in science history at Western Oregon University and the impact you may have on all of Oregon.
I cordially invite you to join us on this important journey.
Thank you,
Mark Weiss
