As part of the 2011-13 Oregon University System (OUS) budget, Western Oregon received approval for funding to construct a new Natural Science Laboratory Facility. This new facility will augment space and expand services that are currently housed in the existing Natural Science Building. The Oregon State Legislature approved a total expenditure of $9.7 million for the new center. As a result, $7.2 million will be funded through Oregon lottery bonds with the balance of $2.5 million secured through grants and private funding. The Science Center project will help accommodate record enrollment by providing increased space for program development and improve the student learning environment by leveraging current technologies, state-of-the-art analytical techniques, and modern safety controls.
University leadership and staff are working diligently and swiftly to obtain the financial resources needed to complete this critical project. To alleviate the current burden on our science facility and staff, an aggressive timeline has been set to break ground in the summer of 2012 so that construction can be completed before classes start in September 2013.
