Sociology is the study of social life, its characteristics, changes, causes and consequences. It combines scientific and humanistic perspectives in the study of historical and contemporary features of social organization. Sociological analyses include the examination of social stratification and inequality, work and industrial relations, family forms and relationships, deviant behavior, social movements and revolutions, globalization, political relations and institutions, and the relationship between the individual and society.
The program provides a strong educational foundation for graduate study and various professional careers. This includes training in writing, research, and analysis, all connected to the development of theory and social science. It is also a goal of the department to train and motivate students to be activists in the service of progressive causes.
Sociology at Western Oregon University offers an excellent selection of substantive areas as well as a series of theory and research methodology classes that prepare students for a senior, research project. The major in Sociology is an excellent foundation for graduate studies. The sociology faculty are committed to the development of students' critical and analytical abilities.
