The Higher Education Survey shows that many who have completed this degree have been promoted to administrative and supervisory positions in fire departments, forest service fire departments and private agencies. Experienced fire fighters with academic credentials are also prepared to serve as instructors in community college fire protection programs.

The Fire Service Administration Degree Program has been part of the WOU curriculum since 1979.

Fire Service Administration Degrees At A Distance Program

Don't have access to a traditional, campus-based program?

Then Western Oregon University's Fire Service Administration Degree Program is tailored for you. You may take a single course, complete a certificate program, or earn a bachelor's degree without ever traveling to our Monmouth, Oregon campus.

Our program makes available:

• 7 Fire Services Administrators' Basic Institute classes
• 7 Fire Services Administrators' Advanced Institute courses
• 16 upper-division Degrees at a Distance independent study courses developed by the National Fire Academy

Fire Services Administration BA/BS Degree Requirements

Requirements provide for an upper-division major built upon the associate degree in Fire Science/Fire Protection presently available from many community colleges, and leads to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree.

Major

The 72-credit hour major includes:

• 45 hours of required professional technical courses in fire protection and fire services administration
• 24 hours of lower-division classes
• 21 hours of upper-division classes
• 27 hours in related social sciences and/or business courses
  Of the 72-credit hour total , 36 hours must be in upper-division courses.

Minor

Of the 27-credit hour total, 12 credits must be in upper-division courses.

• Minors available at WOU include: art, anthropology, biology, business, computer science, earth sciences, economics, education, English, French, general sciences, geography, German, history, humanities, mathematics, music, philosophy, physical sciences, planning, political science, psychology, public policy and administration, sociology, Spanish, speech, theater arts and writing.

Liberal Arts Core Curriculum requirements:

Bachelor of Arts Degree - additional requirements:

• Mathematics (Mth 105 or above) 4 credits
• Computer Science (CS 101 or above) 2 credits
• Foreign Language
  satisfied by completion of 3rd term of the second year of
  Spanish, French, German or Japanese

Bachelor of Science Degree - additional requirements:
Computer Science 12 credits (any combination of these classes, but at least one

• Mathematics course each in mathematics and computer science)
• Statistics NOTE: Mth 105 Introduction to Contemporary Math and CS 101 Computers & Society do not fulfill this requirement.

Western Oregon University operates on the quarter system

All course credits are reflected in quarter credit hours.

• One semester hour is equal to 1.5 quarter credit hours.

Admissions requirements and procedures

To apply:

1. Request an application packet be mailed to you
2. Complete the application materials
3. Write a check for the $50 non-refundable application fee
4. Mail your completed packet to:
   Fire Service Administration Degree Program Coordinator
   Division of Extended Programs
   Western Oregon University
   Monmouth, OR 97361
5. Request official transcripts from each institution you have attended
   Official transcripts must be sent directly to the Fire Service Administration Degree Program Coordinator from the issuing institution.

Admission to the program is limited to those who have:

• Been awarded Firefighter II or equivalent by their state's standards and accreditation board
• Completed at least 24-credit hours of lower division fire science course work, usually through a community college.

Transfer students

Must show evidence of honorable dismissal from other collegiate institutions attended and meet the 2.0 GPA requirement. Students who have more than 24 credit hours to transfer are evaluated only on college work (high school transcripts are required).

Non-Admitted students

Anyone intending to seek a degree from WOU must apply for admission to the university. However, students may enroll in up to two Fire Services Administration courses per term without being officially admitted to WOU. These students are classified as "non-admitted" AND must officially apply for admission as soon as they decide to work toward the degree.

Cooperative Agreement

The University of Alaska-Anchorage and WOU offer the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Services Administration (FSA) through a cooperative agreement facilitated by the Anchorage Regional Fire Training Center. Professional upper-division requirements can be completed by taking FSA Institute classes at the Anchorage Regional Fire Training Center and by completing Degrees at a Distance Fire Service correspondence courses through WOU. UA-A offers other required courses, credits for which may be transferred to WOU as residence credits.
