Academic Excellence Showcase 2015   

Western Oregon University mathematics majors will present their senior projects and senior capstone projects at the 2015 WOU Academic Excellence Showcase. See wou.edu/showcase.

Conferences and Papers 2014-2015   
These 2015 seniors all gave talks at the Annual Meeting of the Pacific Northwest Section of the MAA at the University of Washington Tacoma. Presented papers were: Camarie Campfield: "Portfolio Optimization: A Modeling Perspective", Andy Fry: "Playing with Abelian Sandpiles", Logan Emonds: "Race to the Origin", Christopher Hartman: "Trapezoidal Numbers", Alvaro Francisco Manuel: "Shooting Pool", Christina Moorhead: "Insolvable Configurations of Peg Solitaire", Kyle Peterson: "Pell’s Equation and Continued Fractions", Elizabeth Struxness: "List Coloring", Nicole Welch: "Deck Manipulation Through Perfect Shuffles", Derek Zeis: "Graph Theory and Sprouts"    

Camarie Campfield won the SIAM prize for the best student presentation at the PNW MAA & NUMS 2105 conference for her talk entitled "Portfolio Optimization: A Modeling Perspective"

Employment News 2014-2015   

Daniel Shelton BS '14 MAT '15 is the math teacher at Sweet Home High School.

KaraTyler '14 MAT '15 will be at Crater High School in Central Point OR teaching Algebra I and Precalculus following certification in AVID ( http://www.avid.org/ ) during the summer.

Graduate School News 2014-2015   
Doug Deacock, BS Mathematics'15 was accepted for graduate study at University of Idaho, Montana State University, Binghamton University, and Washington State University.  He chose University of Idaho.   
Andy Fry, BS Mathematics'15 has been accepted for graduate study with financial support at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Colorado State, and University of Colorado - Boulder.  Each invited him for a campus visit.    
Matt Hurliman, B.S. Computer Science / Mathematics '13, earned an M.S. in Computer Science from Digipen Institute of Technology in April 2015.   
Dania Morales BS Mathematics'10, has been accepted to the Western Washington University MS program in Mathematics with a teaching assistantship. She'll start in fall term 2015.   
Ariel Setniker, B.S. Mathematics'13, currently in the Ph.D. program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, passed her Qualifying Exam in Analysis, January 2015.
