The liberal arts and a liberal education

Some people define the liberal arts as the humanities—the study of literature, language, philosophy, history and art, and maybe social sciences.  Others believe liberal arts are any fields where your education is not neatly tied to a career.

No matter what you specialize in, a liberal education hones skills like

  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Inquiry and analysis
  • Clear written and spoken communication
  • Effective work in teams
  • Ethical judgment

Employers seek these skills and our communities need them too.

WOU is a public liberal arts university where the benefits of a liberal education are infused into everyone’s education.
