As you first begin studying Visual Communication Design, it's important to consider what kinds of design work interest you. An internship is the BEST way to get experience and to gain more clarity about what you may or may not like to do when you graduate.
Start with your career center/advisor on campus. Also, many internships have online applications or are advertised through online hubs (like the Portland AIGA site, for example). The State of Oregon has a centralized internship application process that can be found at http://www.dashr.state.or.us/intern/. Many internships are word-of-mouth. Stay connected with classmates and instructors for the latest opportunities.
