Graphic Design

Graphic Design is about bringing together message, meaning, and form to create memorable communications.

Graphic Design is an applied art. Graphic designers must thoughtfully incorporate type and image into visual experiences fueled by the design elements and principles inherent in all art processes.

Across a multitude of media – brochures, packaging, posters, websites, apps for portable devices, exhibition displays, and more – designers solve visual communications challenges in collaboration with a wide array of clients.

In addition to the art foundations courses, students begin their graphic design coursework by learning fundamentals of typography and photography. As they progress, students hone technical skills, learn design theory and history, and incorporate research methods into their design process.

While studying in the upper division sequences, students have the opportunity to apply advanced design processes in print communications, web/interactive design, or both. Opportunities arise for collaboration and participation in community-connected projects, which foster awareness of the social role of design. Toward the end of the program students finalize their portfolio and self-promotional materials as a platform for launching into design practice.
