Practicum information for Undergraduate/Post-baccalaureate program
- Pre-admission Practicum: Students explore their interest in teaching during their freshman and sophomore years by enrolling in FS 199, 303, 358, and 399. Multiple practicums are offered each term for those wishing to gain experience in the public schools. For students who are applying to the College of Education there is an admission requirement of 30 hours in a public school. These practicums are specifically designed to help students gain that experience and are offered every term. Prior to registration the student must attend an orientation in order to set up the placement. Dates and times of the orientation vary and are posted in the Academic Advising and Learning Center, the College of Education, and other sites around campus.
- Undergraduate program practicum:
- Term I: Teacher candidates rotate among district schools to learn about student and teacher roles within each of the four authorization levels, spending one day or 7 1/2 clock hours at each level.
- Term II: Teacher candidates spend two weeks at one site teaching small groups and working with students one on one. At this point they complete a mini-unit of three lessons. This is at the second authorization level.
- Term III: Teacher candidates return to the same classroom as Term II for a four-week block. During this time the first work sample is completed.
- Term IV: Student teachers are in their classrooms full-time (except for three seminar days on-campus) and have full teaching responsibility in their primary authorization area.
