College of Education Accreditation

National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education

On July 1, 1954, the Western Oregon University College of Education was one of the first ever in the United States to achieve accreditation from the new National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Now more than 50 years later NCATE, which was founded by the teaching profession and the states, has become the premier accrediting agency for education professionals in the U.S., currently accrediting 588 colleges of education including the college at WOU.

The NCATE accreditation system is based upon periodic inspection visits. The last NCATE accreditation visits to WOU were in 1998 and 2000. Full accreditation was granted, and the next visit is scheduled Oct. 13-17, 2007.

We are proud of our association with NCATE and that our college has been continuously accredited for more than five decades. We have continuously maintained our high quality programs in preparing teachers as the educational standards have evolved over the years. Responding to the NCATE guidelines and its national standards has helped us maintain that commitment to excellence.

Hilda Rosselli, Dean

College of Education

NCATE-accredited colleges of education produce more than two-thirds of the nation’s new teachers every year. NCATE revises its standards every five years to incorporate best practice and research in order to ensure that the standards reflect a consensus about what is important in teacher preparation today. In the past decade NCATE has moved from focusing on curriculum and what teacher candidates were offered, to a data-driven performance-based system dedicated to determining what candidates know and are able to do. The new system expects teacher preparation institutions to provide compelling evidence of candidate knowledge and skill in the classroom.

From then until today, WOU has been continuously accredited by this prestigious education organization. Click here to view the complete list of institutions receiving coveted accreditation in 1954. Note that we are listed as Oregon College of Education, which was our name at that time.

NCATE is sustained by more than 30 member organizations. Click here for NCATE's mission statement (requires Adobe Reader).

Teacher Standards and Practices Commission

The College of Education is gearing up to again undergo rigorous NCATE review this fall. At the same time we will also be reviewed by Oregon's teacher licensing agency, Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC). Check back here for developing resources on both accreditation reviews.
