COE News

(From WOU President Rex Fuller, April 11th, 2017)

Dear Campus Community,

Within the past week, two disturbing incidents of racism have been reported to local law enforcement. One involved a student being subjected to racist language while walking on campus. The second occurred near campus over the weekend involving racist vandalism. Campus Public Safety and the Monmouth Police Department are collaborating on an investigation of these incidents. If you have any pertinent information, please contact Monmouth police at 503-838-1109.

I am writing to you today to condemn this behavior and to reiterate our core values, which state that we support diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our campus culture: “(WOU’s) practices are guided by…equity and inclusion; a fundamental basis in human diversity; appreciation for the complexity of the world; and strength drawn from our variety of backgrounds, abilities, cultural experiences, identities, knowledge domains and means of expression.”

The city of Monmouth, too, values diversity. Just last week, the city council adopted a resolution of inclusivity that states “The City of Monmouth is an Inclusive City that embraces, celebrates, and welcomes all people without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, age, sexual orientation, gender and gender identification, national origin or perceived national origin, immigrant and refugee status, veteran status or disability.”

I want to assure all members of our campus community that we strive to make WOU a safe, welcoming place. Anyone on campus who feels they are a victim of bias should immediately report the incident to Campus Public Safety. Off-campus incidents should be reported to Monmouth Police Department. Campus Public Safety offers a safety escort service for any students, staff, faculty or university guests who request it at 503-838-8481.

Although we are dismayed by this incident of bias, we remain steadfast in our mission to provide an inclusive, supportive and conducive learning environment for students, faculty and staff. If you are feeling concerned after the incident and would like to talk to a counselor, contact the Student Health and Counseling Center at 503-838-8396.

In closing, I invite the campus community to join me in reaching out to all campus members. Let's reinforce the fact that WOU cherishes its community and students because together we succeed.

Sincerely,
Rex Fuller, Ph.D
President
